Weather Situation
A complex low pressure system over the northern Tasman Sea is expected to
move eastwards during the weekend, with gale force winds over southern
Queensland waters decreasing late today or in the evening. Large south to
southeasterly waves are expected to affect southern Queensland waters [south of
Sandy Cape] during the weekend, resulting in rough surf conditions along the
coast. A high [1031 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east
during the next few days, extending a strengthening ridge over much of
Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Isolated showers about northern Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers about
the southern coast and border ranges, tending scattered about the islands. Fine
and mostly sunny over the interior of the state. Cool to cold most parts with
possible early morning frost patches about the Atherton Tablelands. Fresh to
strong and gusty SW to SE winds over the southeast, reaching gale force with
possible damaging wind gusts about the southern border ranges and Gold Coast
hinterland until late morning. Mostly moderate to fresh and gusty SW to SE winds
over the remainder of the state. Rough surf conditions along the coast south of
Sandy Cape. A Very High fire danger in the Northwest district.
Forecast for Sunday
The large high pressure system is expected to remain slow moving over the
eastern Great Australian Bight and will maintain the deep south to southeasterly
airstream across the state. Isolated showers will occur about the exposed
coastal parts in the onshore southeast airflow. The interior of the state will
remain fine and mostly sunny due to the influence of the high pressure system.
Cool to cold conditions are expected with local frost areas about the Atherton
Tablelands and parts of the southeast interior. Strong winds are expected along
the east coast. Rough surf conditions will persist along the coast south of
Sandy Cape.
Forecast for Monday
The large high pressure system will remain slow moving over Tasmania and will
maintain the deep south to southeasterly airstream across the state. Isolated
showers are expected about the east coast in the onshore southeasterly flow and
will likely tend scattered about coastal parts of the North Topical Coast. The
interior of the state will remain fine due to the influence of the high pressure
system. A cool to cold morning is again expected over the interior with frost
areas through the southeast. Strong winds and rough surf conditions are expected
to have eased along the southern Queensland coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The large high pressure system is forecast to move into the Tasman Sea and
will maintain south to southeasterly winds across the state. Isolated showers
are expected about the east coast in the onshore southeasterly flow, scattered
about the north tropical and central coasts, with isolated showers developing
over the eastern interior during the day. The remainder of the state will remain
fine and mostly sunny under the influence of the high pressure system, apart
from isolated showers over the northwest Gulf Country. A cool morning is again
expected over the southern interior with local frost areas over the southern
inland.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The large high pressure system will slowly drift towards the east over the
outlook period with S to SE winds tending E to SE as the high moves further
away. Scattered showers and fresh to strong winds are expected for the tropical
east coast. A weak upper trough moving across the state during Wednesday and
into Thursday is forecast to increase showers to scattered about the southeast
of the state as well, while extending isolated showers into the central and
southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Another weak upper trough is
expected to move into western Queensland on Friday with increasing high cloud
and possibly a little light rain. Cooler than average conditions should continue
for most of Queensland, with early frost areas about the Granite Belt on
Tuesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
