MELBOURNE - May 24/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for possible damaging wind gusts developing about the southern border ranges and Gold Coast hinterland from late this afternoon. A Strong Wind Warning is current for the southeast Gulf of Carpentaria Waters. A Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters south of Gladstone, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay, for late this afternoon and Saturday. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A complex low pressure system [1004 hPa] off the northern New South Wales coast is expected to gradually deepen over the remainder of today before shifting northeast, with an associated trough entering far southeastern Queensland late this afternoon. The trough is expected to move northeast into far southern Queensland waters over the remainder of today. The trough is then expected to shift east over the Coral Sea during the weekend. Large S'ly waves will affect far southern Queensland waters during the weekend, with rough surf conditions expected. A high [1030 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight will move slowly east over the next few days, extending a strengthening ridge over much of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers about the northeast tropics north of about Cooktown and northern Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers and drizzle areas through the southeast interior, tending scattered and squally with rain areas near southeast border areas. Possible local thunder over the southern border ranges and Gold Coast hinterland. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Fresh to strong and gusty SW'ly winds developing over southeast parts, gale force at times over the southern border ranges and Gold Coast hinterland with possible damaging wind gusts. Moderate to fresh and gusty southwest to southeast winds elsewhere. Forecast for Saturday Isolated showers about northern parts of Cape York Peninsula in the southeasterly onshore flow. Isolated showers about exposed coastal parts from Fraser Island southwards. Fine and mostly sunny over the interior of the state. Cool to cold most parts with possible early morning frost patches about the Atherton Tablelands. Fresh to strong and gusty south to south to southwesterly winds over southeast parts, gradually easing during the evening. Damaging wind gusts will remain possible about the southern border ranges and Gold Coast hinterland during the early morning hours. S'ly winds will remain strong to gale force about the southern and Fraser coasts, though gales will gradually contract offshore during the afternoon. Mostly moderate to fresh SW to SE winds over the remainder of the state. Rough surf conditions about exposed coasts south of Sandy Cape. Forecast for Sunday The large high pressure system is expected to remain slow moving over the eastern Great Australian Bight and will maintain the deep south to southeasterly airstream across the state. Isolated showers will occur about the exposed coastal parts in the onshore southeast airflow. The interior of the state will remain fine and mostly sunny due to the influence of the high pressure system. Cool to cold conditions are expected with local frost areas about the Atherton Tablelands and parts of the southeast interior. Strong winds are expected along the east coast and also over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria during the morning. Rough surf conditions will persist about the exposed coast south of Sandy Cape. Forecast for Monday The large high pressure system will remain slow moving over Tasmania and will maintain the deep south to southeasterly airstream across the state. Isolated showers are expected about the east coast in the onshore southeasterly flow and will likely tend scattered about coastal parts of the North Topical Coast. The interior of the state will remain fine due to the influence of the high pressure system. A cool to cold morning is again expected over the interior with frost areas through the southeast. Strong winds and rough surf conditions are expected to ease along the far southern coast. Forecast for Tuesday The large high pressure system is forecast to move into the Tasman Sea and will maintain south to southeasterly winds across the state. Isolated showers are expected about the east coast in the onshore southeasterly flow, with isolated showers developing over adjacent inland areas during the day. The interior of the state will remain fine and mostly sunny under the influence of the high pressure system. A cool morning is again expected over the southern interior with local frost areas over the southern inland. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The large high pressure system will slowly drift towards the east over the outlook period with S to SE winds tending E to SE as the high moves further away. Isolated showers and fresh to strong winds are expected for much of the east coast. A weak upper trough from Wednesday into Thursday is forecast to increase showers to scattered about the southern coast and extend isolated showers into the southeast and central interior. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A weak upper trough is expected to move into western Queensland on Friday with increasing high cloud and possibly a little light rain. Cooler than average conditions should continue for most of Queensland, with early frost areas about the southeast interior on Tuesday.
