Weather Situation
A complex low pressure system [1004 hPa] off the northern New South Wales
coast is expected to gradually deepen over the remainder of today before
shifting northeast, with an associated trough entering far southeastern
Queensland late this afternoon. The trough is expected to move northeast into
far southern Queensland waters over the remainder of today. The trough is then
expected to shift east over the Coral Sea during the weekend. Large S'ly waves
will affect far southern Queensland waters during the weekend, with rough surf
conditions expected. A high [1030 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight will move
slowly east over the next few days, extending a strengthening ridge over much of
Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers about the northeast tropics north of about Cooktown and
northern Cape York Peninsula. Isolated showers and drizzle areas through the
southeast interior, tending scattered and squally with rain areas near southeast
border areas. Possible local thunder over the southern border ranges and Gold
Coast hinterland. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Fresh to strong and gusty
SW'ly winds developing over southeast parts, gale force at times over the
southern border ranges and Gold Coast hinterland with possible damaging wind
gusts. Moderate to fresh and gusty southwest to southeast winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers about northern parts of Cape York Peninsula in the
southeasterly onshore flow. Isolated showers about exposed coastal parts from
Fraser Island southwards. Fine and mostly sunny over the interior of the state.
Cool to cold most parts with possible early morning frost patches about the
Atherton Tablelands. Fresh to strong and gusty south to south to southwesterly
winds over southeast parts, gradually easing during the evening. Damaging wind
gusts will remain possible about the southern border ranges and Gold Coast
hinterland during the early morning hours. S'ly winds will remain strong to gale
force about the southern and Fraser coasts, though gales will gradually contract
offshore during the afternoon. Mostly moderate to fresh SW to SE winds over the
remainder of the state. Rough surf conditions about exposed coasts south of
Sandy Cape.
Forecast for Sunday
The large high pressure system is expected to remain slow moving over the
eastern Great Australian Bight and will maintain the deep south to southeasterly
airstream across the state. Isolated showers will occur about the exposed
coastal parts in the onshore southeast airflow. The interior of the state will
remain fine and mostly sunny due to the influence of the high pressure system.
Cool to cold conditions are expected with local frost areas about the Atherton
Tablelands and parts of the southeast interior. Strong winds are expected along
the east coast and also over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria during the
morning. Rough surf conditions will persist about the exposed coast south of
Sandy Cape.
Forecast for Monday
The large high pressure system will remain slow moving over Tasmania and will
maintain the deep south to southeasterly airstream across the state. Isolated
showers are expected about the east coast in the onshore southeasterly flow and
will likely tend scattered about coastal parts of the North Topical Coast. The
interior of the state will remain fine due to the influence of the high pressure
system. A cool to cold morning is again expected over the interior with frost
areas through the southeast. Strong winds and rough surf conditions are expected
to ease along the far southern coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The large high pressure system is forecast to move into the Tasman Sea and
will maintain south to southeasterly winds across the state. Isolated showers
are expected about the east coast in the onshore southeasterly flow, with
isolated showers developing over adjacent inland areas during the day. The
interior of the state will remain fine and mostly sunny under the influence of
the high pressure system. A cool morning is again expected over the southern
interior with local frost areas over the southern inland.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The large high pressure system will slowly drift towards the east over the
outlook period with S to SE winds tending E to SE as the high moves further
away. Isolated showers and fresh to strong winds are expected for much of the
east coast. A weak upper trough from Wednesday into Thursday is forecast to
increase showers to scattered about the southern coast and extend isolated
showers into the southeast and central interior. Fine and mostly sunny
elsewhere. A weak upper trough is expected to move into western Queensland on
Friday with increasing high cloud and possibly a little light rain. Cooler than
average conditions should continue for most of Queensland, with early frost
areas about the southeast interior on Tuesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
