Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 22/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for the Southeast Gulf
Waters for Friday.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A surface trough is located through central Queensland to the northwest. An
upper trough will move across the east of the state today as an upper low moves
through southern Queensland. A surface low is expected to develop off the
northern New South Wales coast. A high pressure system [1026 hPa] over the
southern parts of Western Australia will gradually strengthen and move
eastwards, developing a ridge into western Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
A band of cloud with rain and drizzle areas through the southern tropics and
central parts of Queensland. Morning drizzle and afternoon showers through the
southern interior, with isolated thunderstorms over the far south. Isolated
showers in the north of the state with possible thunderstorms about northern
Cape York Peninsula. Fine elsewhere. Cool to cold conditions across the
interior. Mostly light to moderate S to SW winds across the state, tending fresh
at times in the west. Light to moderate S to SE winds across the far northern
Tropics.
Forecast for Friday
The upper low is expected to push off the far southern Queensland coast
during the afternoon. The low pressure system is expected to strengthen off the
northern New South Wales coast, and combined with a high pressure system in the
Great Australian Bight, a cool southerly airmass is expected across the state.
Isolated showers in the southeast and southern interior. Showers will tend
scattered about the southern border, with possible afternoon thunderstorms about
the Granite Belt and Border Ranges. Isolated showers are possible over the
northeast tropics with thunderstorms about Cape York. Fine and mostly sunny
elsewhere. Strong winds are expected during the morning over the southern Gulf
and will develop during the evening about the southeast coast waters.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper low will move further east into the Tasman Sea and the surface low
off the New South Wales coast will continue move east to northeast. A large high
pressure system over the Great Australian Bight will extend a deep southerly
airstream through the state into the tropics, with cooler than average
temperatures expected across Queensland, especially in the south. Moderate to
fresh S to SE winds across the state, tending strong over the southern Gulf as
well as about the northern tropics and southern waters. Gales are expected to
develop off the southeast coast waters as the low moves further offshore.
Isolated showers about the far northern coast with possible storms in Torres
Strait. Isolated showers in the southeast, tending scattered about the exposed
coast. Rough surf conditions will develop about the exposed coast south of Sandy
Cape.
Forecast for Sunday
The large high pressure system will remain anchored in the Great Australian
Bight and will maintain the deep south to southeasterly airstream across the
state. Isolated showers will develop about the exposed coastal parts in the
onshore SE flow. The interior of the state will remain fine, due to the
influence of the high pressure system. Strong winds are expected along the east
coast and also over the southern Gulf of Carpentaria during the morning. Rough
surf conditions about the exposed coast south of Sandy Cape should gradually
ease during the day. Morning frost about parts of the southeast interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The large high pressure system will slowly drift towards the east over the
outlook period maintaining S to SE winds across the state. Isolated showers and
fresh to strong winds are expected for much of the east coast. Fine and mostly
sunny elsewhere. Cool to cold conditions should continue for most of
Queensland.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
