Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 17/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A ridge of high pressure will persist through central Australia and southern
Queensland for the next few days.  A weak upper level trough will enter western
Queensland late today and move east across the south of the state during
Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Partly cloudy across the tropics with isolated showers over the Peninsula
district and some patchy light rain areas north of about Mount Isa to Bowen.
High cloud increasing in the far west during the evening though with little or
no rain. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Light to moderate SW to SE winds,
fresh and gusty at times over southeast districts and near the coast.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers over the tropics with isolated showers over northern parts
of the Central Coast during the morning. High cloud will spread east across the
Northwest district and central areas but little, if any, rainfall is expected.
Fine and mostly sunny across the south of the state. A cold morning across
central and southern areas with early frosts expected about the Maranoa,
southern Burnett and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Light to moderate
SW to SE winds, fresh and gusty at times over southeast districts and near the
coast.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers are expected to persist over the northern and eastern
tropics due to a combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the
tropical interior. Dry and cool SW to SE winds will extend through remaining
parts of the state from a high pressure system near the southwestern border.
Clear skies will result in a cold morning and more extensive early frosts over
inland parts of southeast districts, the southern central interior and the
Maranoa and Warrego district.
Forecast for Monday
Isolated showers will most likely persist over the northeast tropics due to a
moist onshore wind flow. A new trough will move east over the Great Australian
Bight, extending cloud through southwestern Queensland with possible late patchy
rain. A dry airmass and clear skies will persist over remaining parts of the
state, with a cold morning and extensive early frosts expected over the central,
southern and southeastern interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high pressure system is expected to move east into the southern Coral Sea
whilst the trough will move east over western districts. Cloud and rain areas
will spread eastwards and are expected to lie from the Northwest district,
through the Central West to the Darling Downs by the end of the day. Cloud will
increase about the Wide Bay and Southeast Coast districts during the day but it
should remain fine. Isolated showers about the northeast tropics and about the
southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Fine and partly cloudy elsewhere. Early
frost is again possible about the southern and southeast interior but is highly
dependent on cloud cover.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The trough will most likely enter southeast and central districts on
Wednesday and will most likely contract offshore of the southern and central
coasts early Thursday, though continue to extend back towards the southern
tropics. The cloud band, rain areas and possible isolated thunderstorms will
move eastwards across much of the state on Wednesday, before largely clearing
offshore on Thursday. Most of the state should be fine on Friday as dry SW to SE
winds extend across the state from a new high in the Great Australian Bight.
However, isolated showers will persist about the far northeast tropical coast
throughout the outlook period.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
