Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 16/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A ridge of high pressure will persist through central Australia and southern
Queensland for the next few days. A surface trough and an associated S'ly wind
change lies near Bowen and will move north towards Cairns this evening. An upper
level trough and an associated cloud band extends from the northwest of the
state through central and southeast districts. Cool to cold temperatures
occurred under the cloud band today. The upper trough will continue moving east
this evening and contract off the southern coast early Friday, with the cloud
band gradually weakening and contracting north as a result. Another weak upper
level trough will enter western Queensland late Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Isolated to scattered showers and possible isolated thunderstorms over the
northern tropics. Cloud and patchy rain clearing southern central and southeast
districts from the southwest. Remaining cloudy elsewhere over central parts and
through the southern tropics, with patchy rain and showers continuing. Cloudy in
the northwest though with only light rain. Fine and mostly clear in the
southwest apart from some cloud near the southern border. Moderate SE winds
north of Cairns. Moderate SW to NW winds near the southern coast. Light to
moderate mostly SW to SE winds elsewhere, freshening from the south about the
coast south of Cairns.
Forecast for Friday
Partly cloudy over the northern tropics with isolated showers, increasing to
scattered inland and near Torres Strait with possible isolated thunderstorms.
Cloudy and cool over remaining areas north of about Mount Isa to Mackay with
patchy, mostly light rain. Patchy rain clearing the southern central and
Capricorn coasts in the early hours of the morning. High cloud increasing in the
far west late in the day or during the evening though with little or no rain.
Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere with a cool morning and possible early frost
over the southeast interior. Light to moderate SW to SE winds, fresh at times
over southeast districts and near the coast.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers are expected to persist over the tropics due to a
combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the tropical
interior. The upper level trough is expected to move across central parts of the
state and contract the high cloud with little or no rain eastwards during the
day. A ridge of high pressure and dry W to SW winds will persist through western
and southern Queensland, with clear skies continuing and a cold morning and
early frosts expected about the Maranoa, southern Burnett and Darling Downs and
Granite Belt districts.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers are expected to persist over the northern and eastern
tropics due to a combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the
tropical interior. Dry and cool SW to SE winds will extend through remaining
parts of the state from a high pressure system near the southwestern border.
Clear skies will result in a cold morning and more extensive early frosts over
inland parts of southeast districts, the southern central interior and the
Maranoa and Warrego district.
Forecast for Monday
Isolated showers will most likely persist over the northeast tropics due to a
moist onshore wind flow. A new trough will move east over the Great Australian
Bight, extending cloud through southwestern Queensland with possible late patchy
rain. A dry airmass and clear skies will persist over remaining parts of the
state, with a cold morning and extensive early frosts expected over the central,
southern and southeastern interior.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high pressure system is expected to move eastwards and offshore into the
southern Coral Sea from Tuesday. The new trough will most likely move east over
western districts on Tuesday and enter southeast and central districts on
Wednesday. The trough will then most likely contract offshore of the southern
and central coasts early Thursday, though continue to extend back towards the
southern tropics. The trough is expected to extend a cloud band east with its
passage, with patchy rain and possible isolated thunderstorms expected. A weak
ridge and isolated showers will most likely persist over the northeast tropics
during the outlook period. Early frost remains likely over the southeast and
southern central interior on Tuesday ahead of the cloud band.

Friday.
