Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1020 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge through
Central Australia and into Queensland. An upper level trough over far western
Queensland is generating extensive cloud and increasing rain areas over the
state. The cloud and rain band is expected to contract to eastern districts by
late today as the upper trough is expected moves into eastern Queensland tonight
and offshore early Friday morning. A surface trough is expected to develop and
move off the Capricornia and tropical coasts during today.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Cloudy and cool to cold with patchy rain over the west, increasing to areas
of rain with possible moderate falls over central districts. Patchy rain over
most southeast districts. Rain clearing from western districts during the
afternoon. Scattered showers and possible isolated afternoon and evening
thunderstorms over the northeast tropics, with isolated showers over the
northern tropical interior. Dry and cool to mild over far southern Queensland
with a little early frost in the Granite Belt. Light to moderate NW to SW winds
over the far southeast. Light to moderate SW to SE winds elsewhere, fresh at
times over the northwest and about the Capricornia, Central and tropical coasts
during the day.
Forecast for Friday
The upper trough is expected to move eastwards off the east coast in the
morning, with the cloud and rain clearing eastwards early in the morning.
Isolated showers are expected to persist over the northern tropics due to the
combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the tropical
interior. The high pressure system is expected to move over South Australia, a
maintain a ridge across western and central Queensland with dry and cool air
across western, central and southern districts. Early frost areas in the
Maranoa, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. High cloud is expected to
increase over the west of the state due to the next weak upper level trough
moving over central and South Australia, but with little or no rain expected at
this stage.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers are expected to persist over the northern tropics due to a
combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the tropical
interior. The upper level trough is expected to move across the state and
contract the high cloud with little or no rain eastwards during the day. With
the high pressure system remaining over northeast South Australia, a ridge will
extend across western and southern Queensland. As a result, temperatures are
expected to remain below average, with a cold morning and early frost about the
Maranoa, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers are expected to persist over the northern tropics due to a
combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the tropical
interior. The high pressure system is expected to move over far southern
Queensland, with a dry but cool to cold SW to SE airflow across the remainder of
the state and fine conditions. As a result, with temperatures well below
average, extensive early frost is expected about the southern to central
interior, as well as the southeast inland.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high pressure system is expected to move eastwards and offshore into the
southern Coral Sea from Tuesday. A ridge is expected to persist along the
tropical coast with isolated showers. Another upper level trough is expected to
develop and intensify over Western Australia during Monday, before moving
eastwards during Tuesday and Wednesday. This is expected to increase high cloud
over western Queensland during Monday, with patchy rain and isolated
thunderstorms then expected to spread across western, central and southern
districts during Tuesday and contracting into eastern districts during
Wednesday. Below average temperatures are expected to continue on Monday and
into Tuesday, with early frost areas expected about the southern to central
interior, as well as the southeast inland. Minimum temperatures are expected to
increase more significantly on Wednesday due to the increased cloud cover, with
frost unlikely at this stage.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
