MELBOURNE - May 16/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1020 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge through Central Australia and into Queensland. An upper level trough over far western Queensland is generating extensive cloud and increasing rain areas over the state. The cloud and rain band is expected to contract to eastern districts by late today as the upper trough is expected moves into eastern Queensland tonight and offshore early Friday morning. A surface trough is expected to develop and move off the Capricornia and tropical coasts during today. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Cloudy and cool to cold with patchy rain over the west, increasing to areas of rain with possible moderate falls over central districts. Patchy rain over most southeast districts. Rain clearing from western districts during the afternoon. Scattered showers and possible isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the northeast tropics, with isolated showers over the northern tropical interior. Dry and cool to mild over far southern Queensland with a little early frost in the Granite Belt. Light to moderate NW to SW winds over the far southeast. Light to moderate SW to SE winds elsewhere, fresh at times over the northwest and about the Capricornia, Central and tropical coasts during the day. Forecast for Friday The upper trough is expected to move eastwards off the east coast in the morning, with the cloud and rain clearing eastwards early in the morning. Isolated showers are expected to persist over the northern tropics due to the combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the tropical interior. The high pressure system is expected to move over South Australia, a maintain a ridge across western and central Queensland with dry and cool air across western, central and southern districts. Early frost areas in the Maranoa, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. High cloud is expected to increase over the west of the state due to the next weak upper level trough moving over central and South Australia, but with little or no rain expected at this stage. Forecast for Saturday Isolated showers are expected to persist over the northern tropics due to a combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the tropical interior. The upper level trough is expected to move across the state and contract the high cloud with little or no rain eastwards during the day. With the high pressure system remaining over northeast South Australia, a ridge will extend across western and southern Queensland. As a result, temperatures are expected to remain below average, with a cold morning and early frost about the Maranoa, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Forecast for Sunday Isolated showers are expected to persist over the northern tropics due to a combination of an onshore airflow and a surface trough over the tropical interior. The high pressure system is expected to move over far southern Queensland, with a dry but cool to cold SW to SE airflow across the remainder of the state and fine conditions. As a result, with temperatures well below average, extensive early frost is expected about the southern to central interior, as well as the southeast inland. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The high pressure system is expected to move eastwards and offshore into the southern Coral Sea from Tuesday. A ridge is expected to persist along the tropical coast with isolated showers. Another upper level trough is expected to develop and intensify over Western Australia during Monday, before moving eastwards during Tuesday and Wednesday. This is expected to increase high cloud over western Queensland during Monday, with patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms then expected to spread across western, central and southern districts during Tuesday and contracting into eastern districts during Wednesday. Below average temperatures are expected to continue on Monday and into Tuesday, with early frost areas expected about the southern to central interior, as well as the southeast inland. Minimum temperatures are expected to increase more significantly on Wednesday due to the increased cloud cover, with frost unlikely at this stage. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Thursday.
