Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 15/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1020 hPa] over the western Great Australian Bight extends a ridge
through Central Australia and into Queensland. An upper level trough is moving
east towards Queensland tonight, generating extensive cloud and some increasing
rain areas over the state. The upper trough is expected to move into eastern
Queensland by late Thursday, with a surface trough developing off the central
Queensland coast.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Scattered showers about the central coast, isolated showers over the tropics.
Patchy rain over the west, extending across the central interior and towards the
Central Coast. Generally cloudy over the southern half of the state but
remaining fine. Light to moderate E to SE winds over the tropics, tending SW'ly
over the southern half of the state.
Forecast for Thursday
Cloudy and cool to cold with areas of rain from the west to central and
southern tropical districts, with patchy rain extending to the southeast during
the morning. Rain clearing from western districts during the afternoon.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northeast tropics, with
isolated showers over the northern tropical interior. Dry and cool to mild over
southern Queensland with a little early frost in the Granite Belt. Light to
moderate NW to SW winds over the far southeast. Light to moderate SW to SE winds
elsewhere, fresh at times over the northwest and about the Capricornia, Central
and tropical coasts during the day.
Forecast for Friday
The previous rain band clears eastern Queensland early in the morning with
fine and sunny conditions to follow. A colder morning over the southeast region
with early frost near Roma and the Granite Belt. Some high cloud remaining in
the northwest of the state with little or no rain. Isolated showers persisting
in the northeast tropics.
Forecast for Saturday
Similar to Friday but the next weak high cell moving through South Australia
is approaching western Queensland. This will induce lighter winds over southern
Queensland and with the dry air lead to lower minimum temperatures. The end
result of this will be early frost throughout the Darling Downs and the Maranoa
district. Generally dry over the remainder of the state apart from some higher
cloud persisting in the northwest with a little early light rain. Isolated
showers continuing on the northeast tropical coast.
Forecast for Sunday
The weak high moves into the southeast of the state and again reduces wind
speeds, creating lower temperatures over southern Queensland. Extensive early
frost of the southern and southeast interior. Early frost extending into the
southern central highlands, southeast central west and across the Warrego. Dry
and sunny over the remainder of the state apart from isolated showers in the
northeast tropics.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
Not much change on Monday from Sunday as the high cell moves over the
southeast region. The coldest morning in the period will be Monday morning with
extensive early frost over the southeast quarter of the state. Increasing high
cloud from the west again on Tuesday will lead to little or no rain in the west.
Fine over most districts. Patchy rain continues to build in the west on
Wednesday and spreads east into the central interior. Isolated showers over the
northeast region generally. Minimum temperatures will be on the rise over the
south and southeast with decreasing frost.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
