MELBOURNE - May 12/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters for Tuesday morning. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1031 hPa] near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move very slowly to the east while weakening. An upper trough will move through southern inland Queensland today and approach the southeast coast. Forecast for the rest of Monday Mostly cloudy with isolated showers in the east, tending scattered about parts of the coast. Cloudy and cool with patchy rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms over the west and southern interior, spreading into central and southeast districts during the afternoon and evening. Isolated showers over the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh and gusty SE winds along the northern tropics and far northern Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh and gusty SE to SW winds over the west and southern interior. Mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday A slow moving new high in the Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge and drier, cool and gusty S to SW winds across the far west of the state. The upper trough is expected to move east and offshore during the day, contracting the cloud and areas of rain over central and southern districts to the east during the day. However, the surface trough is likely to persist over the interior, generating some showers and isolated thunderstorms over southern and southeast districts. Isolated showers over the northern and eastern tropics. Forecast for Wednesday The new high will remain slow moving in the Great Australian Bight, and continue to extend a ridge and drier, cool and S to SW winds across western and southern parts of the state. Another upper trough will approach the west of the state, increasing cloud over the interior but no rain. Isolated showers over eastern Queensland, mostly near the coast northeast of a weak surface trough. Possible frost about the southeast and southern interior. Forecast for Thursday The new high will remain slow moving in the Great Australian Bight, extending a ridge and drier, cool and gusty S to SW winds across the far south and west of the state. The upper trough will push through southern Queensland, increasing cloud over southern and central areas, with patchy rain and showers expected through central areas of Queensland. Isolated showers over the tropical east. Possible frost about the southeast and southern interior. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high over the Great Australian Bight will remain slow moving and continue to push dry, cool air across the west and most of the southern half of the state, resulting in areas of morning frost about the southeast and southern interior. The upper trough will move off the central coast early Friday clearing the cloud and light rain in the central eastern districts. Another upper trough will push into southern Queensland on Saturday, with further areas of cloud and possible light rain. Isolated showers will continue about the eastern tropical coast in the onshore flow. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
