MELBOURNE - May 12/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Cooktown. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1034 hPa] near New Zealand extends a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move very slowly to the east while weakening during Monday. An upper trough will approach the southwest of the state late today and move through southern inland Queensland on Monday. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Mostly cloudy with isolated showers about the coast. Showers tending scattered about the tropics. Isolated showers over the remainder of northern and eastern Queensland. Cloudy in the far southwest with patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms developing. Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Fresh and gusty SE winds along the east coast and far northern Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday Mostly cloudy with isolated showers in the east, tending scattered along parts of the coast. Cloud increasing from the southwest with patchy mostly light rain and isolated thunderstorms. Isolated showers through the southern and central districts during the afternoon and evening. Fine and partly cloudy elsewhere. Moderate to fresh and gusty SE winds along the east coast and far northern Cape York Peninsula. A moderate to fresh S to SW change spreading from the far southwest. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Tuesday A new high in the Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge and drier, cool and gusty S to SW winds across the far west of the state. The upper trough is expected to move east and offshore during the day, contracting the cloud and patchy rain eastwards. However, the surface trough is likely to persist over the interior, generating some showers and isolated thunderstorms over southern and southeast districts. Isolated showers over the northern and eastern tropics. Forecast for Wednesday A new high will remain slow moving in the Great Australian Bight, extending a ridge and drier, cool and gusty S to SW winds across the far west of the state. Another upper trough will approach the southwest of the state, increasing cloud over the interior but no rain. Isolated showers over eastern Queensland, mostly near the coast. Possible frost about the southeast and southern interior. Forecast for Thursday The new high will remain slow moving in the Great Australian Bight, extending a ridge and drier, cool and gusty S to SW winds across the far south and west of the state. The upper trough will push through southern Queensland, increasing cloud over southern and central areas, with patchy rain and showers expected through central areas of Queensland. Isolated showers over the tropical east. Possible frost about the southeast and southern interior. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high over the Great Australian Bight will remain slow moving and continue to push dry, cool air across the west and most of the southern half of the state, resulting in areas of morning frost about the southeast and southern interior. The upper trough will move off the central coast early Friday clearing the cloud and light rain in the central eastern districts. Another upper trough will push into southern Queensland on Saturday, with further areas of cloud and possible light rain expected. Isolated showers will continue about the eastern tropical coast in the onshore flow. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
