MELBOURNE - May 11/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to St Lawrence. A Strong Wind Warning is current for eastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters north of Crab Island. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1034 hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move towards New Zealand on Sunday, slowly weakening the ridge. An upper trough will approach the southwest of the state late today. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Mostly cloudy with isolated showers about the coast. Showers tending scattered about the tropics. Isolated showers over the remainder of northern and eastern Queensland. Cloud increasing in the far southwest during the day with patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere with another warm day. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds along the east coast and far northern Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday The high should weaken near New Zealand along with the ridge of high pressure along Queensland's east coast. Isolated to scattered showers about the east coast and adjacent inland, developing over the central and southeast interior ahead of the surface trough moving across the interior. The upper trough is expected to move eastwards, extending areas of cloud and patchy rain with isolated thunderstorms across the southwest and southern interior. Becoming cooler in the southwest due to the cloud and SW winds. Forecast for Tuesday A new high in the Great Australian Bight will extend a ridge and drier, cool and gusty S to SW winds across the far west of the state. The upper trough is expected to move east and offshore during the day, contracting the cloud and patchy rain eastwards. However, the surface trough is likely to persist over the interior, generating some showers and isolated thunderstorms over southern and southeast districts. Isolated showers over the northern and eastern tropics. Forecast for Wednesday A new high will remain slow moving in the Great Australian Bight, extending a ridge and drier, cool and gusty S to SW winds across the far west of the state. Another upper trough will approach the southwest of the state, increasing cloud over the interior but no rain. Isolated showers over eastern Queensland, mostly near the coast. Possible frost about the southeast and southern interior. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The high over the Great Australian Bight should continue to push dry, cool air across the west and most of the southern half of the state, resulting in areas of morning frost about the southeast and southern interior. The upper trough will move off the central coast late Thursday or early Friday clearing the cloud and light rain in the central eastern districts. Isolated showers will continue about the eastern tropical coast in the onshore flow. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Sunday.
