Smaller Spring Potato Crop Outlook
WASHINGTON - May 10/13 - SNS -- Spring potato production for 2013 is forecast at 21.9 million cwt (100 pound units), down 18% from 2012, according to the latest crop estimates released by the USDA.
Planted area is forecast at 73,200 acres, a 2% decrease from March intentions. Area for harvest is forecast at 71,000 acres, down 25% from the previous year. The average yield forecast, at 308 cwt per acre, is up 25 cwt from 2012. Beginning in 2013, Texas estimates for spring potatoes will be included in summer potatoes.
