Weather Situation
A slow moving high southeast of Victoria extends a ridge along the east coast
of Queensland. An upper level trough is expected to move over southeast
Queensland during today. A surface trough will enter the far southwest of the
state on Sunday and eventually progress east, reaching southeast Queensland on
Tuesday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers about the east coast generally, increasing along the central
and northeast tropical coasts. Possible thunder near Fraser Island. Isolated
afternoon showers over eastern inland districts. Fine and mostly sunny in the
west and south of the state. Isolated early showers about the southwest Gulf
coast. Strong SE winds about most of the east coast north of Sandy Cape. Strong
SE winds also over northern Gulf waters. Light to moderate NE winds over the
interior. A moderate to high fire danger over eastern districts.
Forecast for Saturday
The southern high will slowly move southeast but maintain the ridge of higher
pressure about the east coast of Queensland. The upper level trough over
southeast Queensland will move offshore. Strong SE winds to continue about most
of the east coast and northern Gulf waters. Showers persisting about the east
coast, more frequent on the northeast tropical coast and the southeast coast.
Very isolated afternoon showers over eastern inland districts. Fine and mostly
sunny through the west and south of the state. Some early showers again about
the southwest Gulf coast.
Forecast for Sunday
The southern high should move a little towards New Zealand with a weakening
ridge along the east coast of Queensland. This will ease winds and seas about
Queensland east coast, contracting the strong winds north to about Cooktown.
Strong SE winds continuing however over northern Gulf waters. Showers persisting
about the east coast, but generally decreasing. Showers again more frequent on
the northeast tropical coast. Very isolated afternoon showers persisting over
the eastern interior, but decreasing. Some early showers again about the
southwest Gulf coast. A new SW'ly wind change or trough will enter the Channel
Country with late patchy rain.
Forecast for Monday
The high near New Zealand weakens which weakens the coastal ridge further and
continues to decrease winds about the east coast of Queensland. Strong SE winds
continuing north of Cooktown. Showers generally decreasing about the east coast.
Isolated showers start to increase over the interior in the afternoon as the
next trough moves into the central interior. Cool conditions with SW'ly winds
over the southwest of the state with patchy light rain.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high over New Zealand rapidly weakens and winds finally decrease below
strong wind force on the northeast tropical coast by Tuesday. The next surface
trough progresses east reaching the southeast of the state on Tuesday. Patchy
rain also moves east across southern districts. Showers persisting along the
east coast and developing inland ahead of the trough. Into Wednesday and
Thursday, the trough or SW'ly change will move up the Queensland coast but slows
down through central districts with persistent showers. Dry and cooler across
southern districts, including the southeast. A chilly morning for Thursday in
the south and southeast with minima dropping to near 5 degrees in many
locations. Becoming fine over most of the tropics apart from the east coast
where showers persist.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
