MELBOURNE - May 9/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to Sandy Cape. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for eastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters north of Crab Island. A Flood Warning is current for the Tully River For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A slow moving high southeast of Victoria extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. An upper level trough is expected to move over southeast Queensland during today. A surface trough will enter the far southwest of the state on Sunday and eventually progress east, reaching southeast Queensland on Tuesday. Forecast for the rest of Friday Isolated showers about the east coast generally, increasing along the central and northeast tropical coasts. Possible thunder near Fraser Island. Isolated afternoon showers over eastern inland districts. Fine and mostly sunny in the west and south of the state. Isolated early showers about the southwest Gulf coast. Strong SE winds about most of the east coast north of Sandy Cape. Strong SE winds also over northern Gulf waters. Light to moderate NE winds over the interior. A moderate to high fire danger over eastern districts. Forecast for Saturday The southern high will slowly move southeast but maintain the ridge of higher pressure about the east coast of Queensland. The upper level trough over southeast Queensland will move offshore. Strong SE winds to continue about most of the east coast and northern Gulf waters. Showers persisting about the east coast, more frequent on the northeast tropical coast and the southeast coast. Very isolated afternoon showers over eastern inland districts. Fine and mostly sunny through the west and south of the state. Some early showers again about the southwest Gulf coast. Forecast for Sunday The southern high should move a little towards New Zealand with a weakening ridge along the east coast of Queensland. This will ease winds and seas about Queensland east coast, contracting the strong winds north to about Cooktown. Strong SE winds continuing however over northern Gulf waters. Showers persisting about the east coast, but generally decreasing. Showers again more frequent on the northeast tropical coast. Very isolated afternoon showers persisting over the eastern interior, but decreasing. Some early showers again about the southwest Gulf coast. A new SW'ly wind change or trough will enter the Channel Country with late patchy rain. Forecast for Monday The high near New Zealand weakens which weakens the coastal ridge further and continues to decrease winds about the east coast of Queensland. Strong SE winds continuing north of Cooktown. Showers generally decreasing about the east coast. Isolated showers start to increase over the interior in the afternoon as the next trough moves into the central interior. Cool conditions with SW'ly winds over the southwest of the state with patchy light rain. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The high over New Zealand rapidly weakens and winds finally decrease below strong wind force on the northeast tropical coast by Tuesday. The next surface trough progresses east reaching the southeast of the state on Tuesday. Patchy rain also moves east across southern districts. Showers persisting along the east coast and developing inland ahead of the trough. Into Wednesday and Thursday, the trough or SW'ly change will move up the Queensland coast but slows down through central districts with persistent showers. Dry and cooler across southern districts, including the southeast. A chilly morning for Thursday in the south and southeast with minima dropping to near 5 degrees in many locations. Becoming fine over most of the tropics apart from the east coast where showers persist. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
