MELBOURNE - May 7/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from Torres Strait to St Lawrence. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A slow moving high [1032 hPa] over the western Tasman Sea will maintain a firm ridge along the east tropical Queensland coast until the weekend. An upper level trough will move east through central districts tonight and contract off the central coast Wednesday morning. A new upper trough will enter the southern interior of the state on Wednesday. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Cloud decreasing over central districts this evening, with scattered showers and drizzle areas easing. Showers, patchy rain and drizzle continuing over the southeast tropics, and extending north along the northeast tropical coast later this evening. Isolated showers over the remaining northern tropics and near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Scattered showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms through western districts east of about Winton to Windorah, decreasing during the evening. Fine and mostly clear over remaining western districts. Isolated showers over the southeast, mostly near and east of the Great Dividing Range and tending scattered near the Sunshine and Wide Bay coasts. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast, becoming strong and gusty north of St Lawrence. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Wednesday Scattered showers near the coast from about Mackay to Maryborough, extending inland during the day with possible isolated afternoon thunderstorms. Isolated showers over remaining parts of the southeast, with possible afternoon thunderstorms near and east of the Great Dividing Range. Mostly cloudy with showers and drizzle areas over the northeast tropical coast with some moderate falls likely. Isolated showers over remaining eastern and northern districts, increasing to scattered near Torres Strait with possible isolated thunderstorms. Mostly fine over the southern interior with just the chance of isolated light showers. Fine and mostly sunny over the central west. A warm day in the west of the state, with a Very High fire danger over the North West and Channel Country districts. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds along the east coast north of St Lawrence and also through far northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to remain over the Tasman Sea and maintain the firm ridge along the east Queensland coast, with strong SE winds persisting north of St Lawrence and through northern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. The new upper trough is expected to move into southeast Queensland, with the resulting instability combining with a moist onshore wind flow to result in isolated to scattered showers and possible local thunder near the coast south of about Bundaberg. Drier air is expected to extend through remaining parts of the southeast though isolated showers remain possible east of the Great Dividing Range. Isolated showers will continue over remaining eastern districts and near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast in the onshore wind flow, with showers more frequent again about the east tropical coast and some moderate falls likely. Isolated thunderstorms remain likely through Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected in the west of the state, with temperatures to remain above the May average. Forecast for Friday The upper trough is expected to contract east off the southern Queensland coast, with more stable conditions developing in its wake. The high will remain slow moving over the western Tasman Sea, maintaining a firm ridge and fresh to strong SE winds along the east Queensland coast and through northern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Isolated showers will persist over eastern districts north of Fraser Island and near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast in the onshore wind flow, more scattered about the east tropical coast. Mostly fine conditions are expected through the southeast with just the chance of isolated showers near the coast. Isolated thunderstorms remain possible in a moist and unstable airmass through Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected in the west of the state, with temperatures to remain above the May average. Forecast for Saturday The high will shift east towards New Zealand, relaxing the ridge along the east tropical coast with strong SE winds contracting to waters north of Cooktown. A trough will move north from New South Wales, generating scattered showers about the exposed southern Queensland coast. Scattered showers will also persist about the east tropical coast and near Torres Strait in the moist onshore wind flow, with isolated light showers over remaining eastern districts north of about Fraser Island and also near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Temperatures will remain above the May average over the southwest of the state. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The high near New Zealand will weaken during the outlook period, with the ridge relaxing further. Showers and SE'ly winds will therefore decrease along the east Queensland coast. A new trough will most likely enter the southwest of the state late Sunday and move east across southern and central Queensland during Monday and Tuesday, generating showers and possible isolated thunderstorms with its passage. Temperatures should remain generally warmer than average through southern and western districts ahead of the trough, with a cooler S'ly change behind the trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Wednesday.
