Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 6/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from
Torres Strait to St Lawrence.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1029 hPa] near Tasmania is moving slowly eastwards and extends a
strengthening ridge along the east Queensland coast. A trough near the southern
tropical coast is moving north. A broad, slow moving upper level trough extends
over Queensland, while an inland surface trough extends through the west of the
state.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Mostly cloudy over central districts and the southeast tropics with showers,
patchy rain, drizzle areas and possible isolated thunderstorms. Scattered
showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms developing through western districts
east of about Winton to Windorah during the day. A warm and mostly sunny day
over remaining western districts. Mostly fine over the southeastern interior
with isolated showers. Scattered showers about the Southeast and Wide Bay
coasts, with possible isolated thunderstorms north of about Brisbane. Isolated
showers over the northern and eastern tropics and near the southern Gulf of
Carpentaria coast, increasing to scattered showers about the North Tropical
Coast. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds along the tropical east coast.
Moderate to fresh SE winds along the remaining east coast. Mostly moderate SE to
NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Wednesday
The strong high will move only slowly east over the Tasman Sea, maintaining a
ridge and fresh to strong SE winds along the east coast and through northern
Gulf of Carpentaria waters. The upper trough will contract east into the Coral
Sea while a second upper trough will enter the southern interior of the state.
The instability associated with this new upper trough will combine with a moist
onshore wind flow to generate isolated to scattered showers and possible
isolated thunderstorms over southeast and southern central districts. Isolated
showers will occur through remaining eastern districts and near the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast, with possible isolated thunderstorms through Torres Strait.
Showers will be more frequent near the northeast tropical and central coasts
with some moderate falls likely. Some cloud will extend through the southwest of
the state though with only isolated light showers expected. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions should continue through remaining western districts with
another warm day expected.
Forecast for Thursday
The high is expected to remain over the Tasman Sea and maintain the firm
ridge along the east Queensland coast, with strong SE winds persisting north of
St Lawrence and through northern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. The upper trough is
expected to move into southeast Queensland, with the resulting instability
combining with a moist onshore wind flow to result in isolated to scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms near the coast south of about Bundaberg.
Drier air is expected to extend through remaining parts of the southeast though
isolated showers remain possible near and east of the Great Dividing Range.
Isolated showers will continue over remaining eastern districts and near the
Gulf of Carpentaria coast in the onshore wind flow, with showers more frequent
again about the east tropical and central coasts and some moderate falls likely.
Isolated thunderstorms remain likely through Torres Strait. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions are expected in the west of the state, with temperatures to
remain above the May average.
Forecast for Friday
The upper trough is expected to contract east off the southern Queensland
coast, with more stable conditions developing in its wake. The high will deepen
further over the western Tasman Sea, maintaining a firm ridge and fresh to
strong SE winds along the east Queensland coast and through northern Gulf of
Carpentaria waters. Isolated to scattered showers will persist over eastern
districts and near the southern Gulf of Carpentaria coast in the onshore wind
flow. Isolated thunderstorms remain possible in a moist and unstable airmass
through Torres Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected in the west
of the state, with temperatures to remain above the May average.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The high is expected to shift east towards New Zealand during the outlook
period, gradually relaxing the ridge along the east Queensland coast. Isolated
showers will continue near the east Queensland coast, scattered on Saturday
before the SE'ly wind flow eases. A new trough will most likely enter the
southwest of the state on Monday, generating showers and possible isolated
thunderstorms. Temperatures should remain generally warmer than average through
southern and western districts during the outlook period.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
