MELBOURNE - May 5/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for coastal waters between Bowen and Gladstone. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1028 hPa] near Tasmania is moving slowly eastwards and extends a strengthening ridge along the east Queensland coast. A trough near the Capricorn Coast is expected to move north along the central Queensland coast through today. An upper level trough over central Australia is expected to move east across Queensland today, with an inland surface trough expected to lie over the central and southern interior. Forecast for the rest of Monday Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the Capricornia, Central Coast and Whitsundays, Central Highlands and Coalfields districts. Isolated showers about the remainder of the eastern tropics. Isolated showers about the southeast, tending scattered about the coast north of Brisbane. Isolated showers and isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms over the southeast interior. Isolated showers over the Gulf Country west of about Burketown. Fine elsewhere, though high cloud over the southwest and southern interior. A very warm day in the west. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds along the east coast and over the far north, tending fresh to strong about the Capricornia and central Queensland coast during the afternoon and evening. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in the Northwest, Channel Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. Forecast for Tuesday The high is expected to strengthen but move only slowly eastwards into the southern Tasman Sea. The ridge along the east coast is also expected to strengthen, with fresh to strong SE winds expected along most of the tropical coast. The associated onshore flow will bring isolated showers to eastern Queensland and the tropical interior, tending scattered about the east coast and adjacent inland. The inland surface trough is expected to move westwards to lie from about Normanton to the eastern Channel Country in the afternoon and evening. A broad upper trough will remain situated over southern and eastern Queensland, and will enhance instability east of the surface trough over the central and southern interior with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Isolated showers are expected once again over the Gulf Country west of about Burketown. Fine and mostly sunny in the far west of the state, with temperatures to remain above the May average. Forecast for Wednesday The high is expected to maintain intensity while moving slowly across the southern Tasman Sea. The high will continue to extend a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast, with strong SE winds along the tropical coast and far northern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Mostly cloudy over eastern Queensland with isolated showers, tending scattered about the coast. More widespread showers are expected about the North Tropical Coast with moderate falls. Isolated showers over the central and southern interior, as well as over the Gulf Country west of about Burketown. Another upper trough is expected to move over northern New South Wales, and combined with the onshore flow is expected to produce scattered showers about the Southeast Coast, Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible about the Southeast Coast, Wide Bay and Burnett and southern Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Fine and mostly sunny in the west of the state, with temperatures to remain above the May average. Forecast for Thursday The high is expected to remain over the Tasman Sea and maintain the firm ridge along the east Queensland coast, with strong SE winds along the tropical coast and far northern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Mostly cloudy over eastern Queensland with isolated showers, tending scattered about the coast. The upper trough is expected to move into southeast Queensland, and combined with the onshore flow is expected to produce scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the Southeast Coast, Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Isolated showers may also occur over the southern interior due to the upper trough. Isolated showers are expected once again over the Gulf Country west of about Burketown. Fine and mostly sunny in the west of the state, with temperatures to remain above the May average. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high is expected to remain over the Tasman Sea and maintain a firm ridge with fresh to strong SE winds and showers over eastern districts and the far north of the state. These showers are likely to contract to areas closer to the coast by Saturday as the upper trough moves offshore. Remaining fine and mostly sunny over the interior, with temperatures to generally remain above average. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
