Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - May 4/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between
Torres Strait and Cooktown.

Weather Situation
A high [1029 hPa] in the Great Australian Bight extends a firm ridge along
the Queensland coast. A coastal trough is moving through southern Queensland
waters, and will continue to move northwards throughout today along with a fresh
S to SE change.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Mostly cloudy with isolated showers over Cape York Peninsula and the North
Tropical Coast and adjacent inland. Isolated showers along the coast and
adjacent inland south of Yeppoon. Isolated showers over the Gulf Country west of
about Burketown. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere, though some high cloud over
the southwest. A very warm day in the west. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds
along the east coast and over the far north. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The high is expected to move to east of Tasmania by night and maintain a firm
ridge along most of the east Queensland coast. A trough and associated fresh to
strong SE wind change is expected to move north along the Capricornia and
Central Coast. This combined with an upper trough moving over the central and
southern interior is expected to produce scattered showers and isolated
afternoon and evening thunderstorms over central districts, with isolated
showers and thunderstorms extending into the eastern Maranoa and Warrego
district near an inland surface trough. Isolated showers are expected over
remaining eastern districts, including the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.
Isolated showers are also expected over the Gulf Country west of about
Burketown. Fine and very warm over the west of the state, though more high cloud
is expected over the southwest.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to strengthen but move only slowly eastwards into the
southern Tasman Sea. The ridge along the east coast is also expected to
strengthen, with fresh to strong SE winds expected along most of the tropical
coast. The associated onshore flow will bring isolated showers to eastern
districts, tending scattered about the coast and adjacent inland between about
Cairns and St Lawrence as a trough moves northwards. The inland surface trough
is expected to move westwards to lie from about Normanton to Thargomindah in the
afternoon and evening. A broad upper trough will remain situated over southern
and eastern Queensland, and will enhance instability east of the surface trough
over the central and southern interior with isolated showers and thunderstorms.
Fine and mostly sunny in the far west of the state, with temperatures to remain
above the May average.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high is expected to maintain intensity while moving slowly across the
southern Tasman Sea. The high will continue to extend a firm ridge along the
east Queensland coast, with strong SE winds along the tropical coast and far
northern Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Mostly cloudy over eastern districts with
isolated showers, more widespread about the North Tropical Coast. Isolated
showers over the central and southern interior. Another upper trough is expected
to move over northern New South Wales and approach southeast Queensland, and
combined with the onshore flow is expected to produce scattered showers about
the Capricornia coast, as well as the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast
districts. Isolated thunderstorms are also possible about the Southeast Coast,
Wide Bay and Burnett and far southern Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.
Fine and mostly sunny in the west of the state, with temperatures to remain
above the May average.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high is expected to remain over the Tasman Sea and maintain a firm ridge
with fresh to strong SE winds and showers over eastern districts and the far
north of the state. These showers are likely to contract to areas closer to the
coast by Saturday as the upper trough moves offshore. Remaining fine and mostly
sunny over the interior, with temperatures to generally remain above average.
