Weather Situation
A broad, slow moving area of high pressure across southeast Australia and the
Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the southern east coast Queensland coast. At 2
pm, Tropical Cyclone Zane [994 hPa] was located 730 kilometres east of Lockhart
River. Tropical Cyclone Zane is expected to develop a west-northwest towards the
far north Queensland coast over the next 36 hours and is likely to cross over
northern Cape York Peninsula early on Thursday morning.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered squally showers and isolated thunderstorms northeast of Cardwell to
Weipa. Isolated showers over the remaining east coast and adjacent inland and
about the northern Gulf Country. Fine and mostly clear conditions through the
interior of the state. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast,
increasing to strong and gusty along the east coast north of Bowen, with gales
expected to develop between Cape Grenville and Cape Tribulation late tonight.
Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Wednesday
Squally showers, rain areas and thunderstorms through the tropics north of
about Cape Tribulation with moderate to heavy falls. Scattered squally showers
and patchy rain will persist over the remainder of the tropics, with more
isolated showers through the western Gulf Country. Isolated showers about
remaining eastern districts. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected
through the remainder of the interior of the state, though some high cloud may
increase over the southwest. Cool daytime temperatures will persist in the
northern tropics under the cloud cover and rainfall. Gales about coastal areas
between Cape Grenville and Cape Tribulation, extending north and west to the
Torres Strait Islands and western side of Cape York Peninsula. Destructive winds
developing between Cape Grenville and Cape Sidmouth late in the day as Tropical
Cyclone Zane approaches the coast. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, strong in
the morning north of Cardwell.
Forecast for Thursday
At this stage, Tropical Cyclone Zane is expected to cross the coast over
northern Cape York Peninsula early in the morning. A new high will move east
over Victoria, strengthening the ridge again along the east Queensland coast. A
trough and an associated fresh to strong S'ly wind change will most likely move
north along the New South Wales coast and enter southern Queensland waters early
in the day. An upper trough will also most likely move east into southeastern
districts, increasing instability with isolated showers and possible afternoon
thunderstorms expected near and east of the Great Dividing Range. A moist and
unstable airmass will persist through the northern tropics and Gulf of
Carpentaria coast in the wake of the passage of Tropical Cyclone Zane. Rain
areas and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula should ease
to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms during the day. Isolated to
scattered showers will occur along the remaining east coast in the onshore wind
flow. Fine and mostly sunny conditions will continue over remaining parts of the
interior of the state.
Forecast for Friday
An area of high pressure will move north east across New South Wales,
maintaining the ridge along the east Queensland coast and establishing a dry and
stable airmass over much of the state. Isolated showers are possible over most
eastern districts in the fresh to strong moist onshore wind flow, tending
scattered along the north tropical coast and central coasts. The southeast of
the state should be mostly fine with only isolated showers about the exposed
coast.
Forecast for Saturday
A new high is likely to form over the Southern Ocean with a firm ridge
extending along the east coast of Queensland. Fresh to strong SE'ly winds and
isolated to scattered showers should persist along the east coast north of about
Bowen. Fine and mostly sunny conditions elsewhere in the state.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The high should begin to weaken late in the weekend as a new upper trough
moves east over southern Queensland early next week. The upper trough, in
combination with onshore flow is likely to lead to an increase in showers about
the east coast during the outlook period, which may extend in to the central and
southern interior on Tuesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
