Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 27/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A broad area of high pressure over eastern Australia and into the northern
Tasman Sea extends a ridge through Queensland. An upper trough lies along the
east coast, and will move off the coast tonight. A trough lies over the northern
Coral Sea, with an embedded slow moving low pressure system situated over the
Solomon Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Partly cloudy with isolated showers over Cape York Peninsula and about the
east coast and adjacent inland, tending more scattered about the coast and
ranges north of about Ingham. Isolated showers over the Gulf Country west of
about Burketown. Moderate to fresh and gusty SE winds along the east coast north
of Fraser Island. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
Partly cloudy with isolated showers along the east coast, tending more
scattered about the coast and ranges north of about Ingham. Fine elsewhere. A
cool morning across the south. Moderate to fresh and gusty SE winds along the
east coast north of Fraser Island. Light to moderate SE to NE winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Monday
The high is expected to remain located over the Tasman Sea with a ridge along
the east coast to maintain an onshore airflow with isolated showers along the
central and southern Queensland coasts. The outlook for the far northern tropics
remains a little uncertain, but at this stage the low is expected to be situated
over the far northwest Coral Sea and still offshore of the northeast Queensland
coast, and may develop into a Tropical Cyclone during the day. However, it is
expected that there will be at least strong and gusty winds about the coast
north of about Cairns, with increasing showers and isolated thunderstorms
expected to develop in the evening. The upper level high and ridge over central
Queensland will maintain dry and stable conditions throughout inland parts of
the state. A cool morning in the south.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to move southeast and be located near New Zealand, and
will continue to extend a ridge along the east coast with an onshore airflow and
isolated showers into the southeast Queensland coast, as well as across the
central Queensland coast and adjacent inland. In the far north, there will
continue to be some uncertainty regarding the movement and intensity of the low
or tropical cyclone. At this stage it appears as though the system will approach
the east coast of Cape York Peninsula with at least very strong to gale force
and gusty winds, and areas of rain and thunderstorms spreading across Cape York
Peninsula and the North Tropical Coast with some heavy falls. Scattered showers
over the remainder of the tropics, with more isolated showers and thunderstorms
over the western Gulf Country. Dry throughout the rest of the interior of the
state. Cool daytime temperatures in the northern tropics.
Forecast for Wednesday
A new high will build through the Great Australian Bight, and maintain the
ridge along the east coast of Queensland. This will continue with the onshore
airflow and isolated showers over central and southern coastal areas and
adjacent inland. In the far north, there will continue to be some uncertainty
regarding the movement and intensity of the low or tropical cyclone. At this
stage it appears as though the system will move across Cape York Peninsula, with
rain and thunderstorms over the north of the state with moderate to heavy falls,
and at least very strong to gale force and gusty winds. Scattered showers over
the remainder of the tropics. Dry throughout the rest of the interior of the
state, though high cloud building in the southwest. Cool daytime temperatures in
the northern tropics.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
A ridge of high pressure is expected to be maintained along most of the east
Queensland coast, strengthening from the south. As a result, isolated showers
are expected about the southern and central Queensland coasts, increasing to
generally scattered showers late Thursday and Friday due to the stronger ridge.
In the north, the tropical low or Cyclone is expected to have moved west into
the Gulf of Carpentaria, while most likely weakening. Rain is expected to have
eased, but showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the northern
tropics and the Gulf Country in its wake. Remaining fine over the remainder of
the interior of the state.
