Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 23/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak ridge of high pressure lies over eastern Queensland. A surface trough
extending from the northwest of the state across to the southeast interior will
move off the far southeast coast during today and stall about Fraser Island on
Wednesday. An upper trough over the central Australia will move east over
western Queensland and weaken as another upper trough amplifies over southern
Australia.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over central and southeast
Queensland in the afternoon and evening, mostly over areas from the Sunshine
Coast to Rockhampton. The high cloud over western Queensland and the southern
interior is likely to generate some isolated thunderstorms and patchy light
rain, with maximum temperatures generally below average in this area. Maximum
temperatures will remain generally above average through remaining parts of the
state. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds to the west of trough, tending light to
moderate SE to NE east of the trough.
Forecast for Wednesday
Scattered afternoon showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms are likely east
of the surface trough especially south of about Charters Towers. Isolated
showers will also be possible about the southeast coast and far northern
Peninsula. Cloudy conditions with possible thunderstorms are possible in the far
west of state, especially in the morning. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds to the
west of trough, tending light to moderate SE to NE east of the trough. A Very
High Fire Danger in the North West.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough will move into far southwestern Queensland during the
afternoon but bring little change to the dry weather. The surface trough will
remain almost stationary with a continued chance of isolated showers and
thunderstorms to the east of the surface trough, but it should be mostly fine in
the northern tropics with only isolated showers about the far north of Cape York
Peninsula and Torres Strait. Isolated showers are also possible in the southeast
again. Fine and mostly sunny conditions in the west and southern interior will
prevail as the high slowly moves across southeast Australia.
Forecast for Friday
The high over southeast Australia will move east across New South Wales and
extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast with isolated showers likely
along the length of the east coast. The upper trough will continue to amplify
over western Queensland, possibly enhancing shower and thunderstorms activity in
parts of western Queensland, particularly in the central interior near a surface
trough.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will move slowly east over the Tasman Sea continuing to extend a
ridge with isolated showers along the east coast. The upper trough will move
over eastern Queensland, with fine and sunny conditions prevailing over western
Queensland.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The high will move slowly east and weaken over the Tasman Sea as another high
moves over southeastern Australia and into the Tasman Sea on Tuesday. This
series of high pressures systems will maintain the east coast ridge and isolated
coastal showers. Showers will possibly be more scattered at times about the
central and tropical coasts. Fine and sunny conditions will continue over
western Queensland under the influence of a dry, stable air mass.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
