Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 23/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak ridge of high pressure lies over eastern Queensland. A surface trough
extending from the northwest of the state across to the southeast interior will
move off the far southeast coast during today. An upper level trough lies over
southern Queensland, and will push off the coast this morning, while another
upper trough will approach the southwest of the state later today.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over central and southeast
Queensland in the afternoon and evening, mostly over areas from the Sunshine
Coast to Rockhampton. The high cloud over western Queensland and the southern
interior is likely to generate some isolated thunderstorms and patchy light
rain, with maximum temperatures generally below average in this area. Maximum
temperatures will remain generally above average through remaining parts of the
state. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds to the west of trough, tending light to
moderate SE to NE east of the trough.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough should remain almost stationary, extending from Fraser
Island to Emerald and through to the Gulf Country. Scattered afternoon showers
and isolated gusty thunderstorms are likely east of the surface trough
especially south of about Charters Towers. A high should move east across South
Australia, extending dry S to SE winds and fine conditions through much of the
interior of Queensland.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough will move over the southeast of the state, with the surface
trough extending from the Gulf Country into the southeast interior. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms are expected to the east of the surface trough through
most eastern districts, but it should be mostly fine in the northern tropics
with only isolated showers about the far north of Cape York Peninsula and Torres
Strait. Fine and mostly sunny conditions in the west and southern interior will
prevail as the high slowly moves across southeast Australia.
Forecast for Friday
The high over southeast Australia will move east across New South Wales and
extend a ridge along the east Queensland coast with isolated showers likely
along the length of the east coast. The upper trough will move off the central
Queensland coast during the day, possibly enhancing shower and thunderstorms
activity through the eastern interior. It will remain fine and mostly sunny in
the west and southern interior as dry, stable conditions continue.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The high looks likely to move into the Tasman Sea on the weekend maintaining
the east coast ridge and isolated coastal showers. Showers will possibly be more
scattered at times about the central and tropical coasts. A new upper level
trough will most likely move east into central Australia on Saturday, extending
high cloud into southwestern Queensland that will extend eastwards on Sunday.
Showers increasing with isolated storms developing through Torres Strait in a
moist and unstable airmass.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
