Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 21/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A weak ridge of high pressure lies over eastern Queensland. An upper level
trough will move east across the southern interior of the state overnight,
clearing off the southeast coast on Monday afternoon. Another upper trough will
approach the southwest of the state late Monday with a surface trough moving
northeast across the interior of the state.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Isolated showers about the central coast and islands. Mostly fine over the
tropics with only isolated showers near the east tropical coast and through
parts of the Peninsula district. High cloud extending from the west through far
southern Queensland, though with little, if any, rainfall expected. Light to
moderate SE to NE winds tending NE to NW over the southern interior. Increased
southerly swells over exposed southern waters will continue to decrease.
Forecast for Monday
Areas of cloud and patchy light rain over southern and southwest Queensland
though little rainfall is expected. Mostly fine elsewhere with only isolated
light showers over central districts and the northeast tropical coast. Scattered
showers and possible thunderstorm activity through far northeast stretches of
Torres Strait. Maximum temperatures will be above average across most of the
interior, particularly in the northwest. A Very High fire danger in the Channel
Country. Light to moderate SE to NE winds in the northeast of the state, tending
NE to NW over remaining central and eastern parts. Moderate to fresh S to SW
winds in the southwest and southern interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough and surface trough are both expected to move east into
eastern Queensland, with scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over central
and southeast Queensland in the afternoon and evening, mostly over areas south
of about Yeppoon. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will extend southwest
through Torres Strait in a moist and unstable airmass. The high cloud over
western Queensland and the southern interior is likely to generate some patchy
light rain, with maximum temperatures generally below average in this area.
Maximum temperatures will remain generally above average through remaining parts
of the state.
Forecast for Wednesday
The surface trough should move further north along the southern coast towards
Fraser Island whilst another upper trough is expected to move across the
southern interior of the state. Scattered afternoon showers and isolated gusty
thunderstorms are likely east of the surface trough extending from about
Hughenden to the southern Wide Bay district. Isolated showers are expected
through the Southeast Coast district. Scattered showers, patchy rain and
isolated thunderstorms will occur over the far north of Cape York Peninsula and
Torres Strait. A high should move east across southeast Australia, extending dry
S to SE winds and fine conditions through much of the interior of
Queensland.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper trough will most likely move east into the southeast of the state
whilst a high should move east across southeast Australia. The surface trough
should lies from the northeast of the state into the southeast interior.
Isolated showers are expected to the east of the surface trough through most
eastern districts, but it should be mostly fine in the tropics with only
isolated showers. Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms will
occur over the far north of Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. Fine and
mostly sunny in the west and southern interior.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The upper trough will most likely contracting offshore on Friday with the
high moving into the Tasman Sea. A ridge and fresh to strong E to SE winds will
extend along much of the east Queensland coast with isolated to scattered
showers near the east coast in the onshore wind flow. A new upper level trough
will most likely move east into central Australia on Saturday, extending high
cloud into southwestern Queensland that will extend eastwards on Sunday.
Widespread showers and isolated storms will persist through Torres Strait in a
moist and unstable airmass.

Monday.
