A high south of Tasmania extends a weakening ridge over western Queensland and the southern interior. An upper level trough will move east across the southern interior of the state today. A surface trough will approach the far southwestern border late tonight. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Scattered showers about the central coast and islands, decreasing to isolated showers during the morning. Mostly fine over the tropics with only isolated showers developing near the east tropical coast and through parts of the Peninsula district during the afternoon. A cool to cold morning through southern Queensland with early light frost patches over the Maranoa and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. High cloud extending from the west through far southern Queensland during the day, though with little, if any, rainfall expected. Moderate to fresh SW to SE winds along the southern coast, tending light to moderate SE to NE during the day. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, tending NE to NW over the southern interior during the day. Large S'ly swells over exposed southern waters, decreasing late in the day. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country. Forecast for Monday The upper trough will move rapidly east across southern Queensland, while another will approach the southwest border at night. This will maintain areas of cloud over southern Queensland though little rainfall is expected. A new surface trough is expected to move across the central and southern Queensland interior. This surface trough will most likely be assisted by the upper trough to generate isolated showers over central districts. A trough will continue to generate shower and thunderstorm activity through far northeast stretches of Torres Strait. Mostly fine conditions are expected along the northeast tropical coast with just the chance of isolated light showers. Maximum temperatures will be above average across most of the interior ahead of the surface trough, particularly in the northwest. Forecast for Tuesday The new upper trough and surface trough are both expected to move east into eastern Queensland, with scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over central and southeast Queensland in the afternoon and evening, mostly over areas south of about Yeppoon. Showers and isolated thunderstorms will extend southwest through Torres Strait in a moist and unstable airmass. The high cloud over western Queensland and the southern interior is likely to generate some patchy light rain, with maximum temperatures generally below average in this area. Maximum temperatures will remain generally above average through remaining parts of the state. Forecast for Wednesday The surface trough should move further north along the southern coast towards Fraser Island whilst another upper trough is expected to move across the southern interior of the state. Scattered afternoon showers and isolated gusty thunderstorms are likely east of the surface trough extending from about Hughenden to the northern Sunshine Coast. Isolated showers are expected through remaining parts of the Southeast Coast district. Scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms will occur over the far north of Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait. A high should move east across southeast Australia, extending dry S to SE winds and fine conditions through much of the interior of Queensland. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The upper trough will most likely move east into southeast districts on Thursday before contracting offshore on Friday. Unstable conditions and isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are therefore expected over central and southeastern districts east of the Great Dividing Range on Thursday, with storms less likely on Friday as the upper trough contracts offshore. A ridge and fresh to strong E to SE winds will extend along much of the east Queensland coast from Friday, with isolated to scattered showers near the east coast in the onshore wind flow. A new upper level trough will most likely move east into central Australia on Saturday, extending high cloud into southwestern Queensland. Widespread showers and isolated storms will persist through Torres Strait in a moist and unstable airmass. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Sunday.
