Australia -- Victoria Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 17/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Victoria was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
A cold front will move through Bass Strait and southern Victoria this morning whilst a high pressure system strengthens south of the Bight. The high will move steadily eastwards on Thursday, passing to the south of Tasmania on Friday as a low pressure system develops off the east coast of New South Wales. The high will extend a ridge across Victoria on Saturday as the low pressure system moves away to the east. The next cold front will enter western Victoria late Sunday but is expected to weaken as it crosses the State.
Forecast for the rest of ThursdayScattered showers over southern and mountain districts becoming widespread over East Gippsland and falling as snow later about the Alpine peaks. Isolated showers near the ranges in the north from early afternoon. The chance of hail and thunder over the southeast during the afternoon. Fine over the northern plains. A cool day with moderate to locally fresh southerly winds.Fire Danger -  Low to moderate but reaching high in the north.Friday 19 AprilScattered showers in the southeast, tending to rain areas over East Gippsland. Showers falling as snow about Alpine areas. Isolated showers about the Otway ranges, but dry elsewhere. Local early frost then a cool day with light to moderate southeasterly winds, fresh to strong in the east and possibly reaching gale force about Alpine areas.Saturday 20 AprilScattered showers over East Gippsland, isolated showers over the remainder of Gippsland and about the Otway ranges but dry elsewhere. Local early frost, then a cool to mild day with light to moderate southeast to easterly winds.Sunday 21 AprilFine at first with freshening northerly winds ahead of a southwest change in the far west late in the day. A cool to mild day with increasing cloud and patchy rain gradually extending from the west from late morning.The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EST Thursday.Product IDV10310
