MELBOURNE - Apr 12/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Gale Warning has been issued for coastal waters between Sandy Cape and Point Danger for this afternoon and evening. A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Cooktown and Point Danger, including Hervey and Moreton Bays. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1028 hPa] in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge through southeastern Australia. An upper trough will move east over eastern districts during today. A surface trough extends from the northwest Coral Sea to a low over the central Coral Sea. This low is expected to shift south and deepen off the southeast coast of Queensland today, extending strong to gale force S to SE winds and rough surf along the coast from Fraser Island to the New South Wales border. The low is then expected to move southeast further away from the southern Queensland coast on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Winds increasing and rough surf developing along the southern and Fraser coasts with frequent gusty showers and some moderate falls. Cloudy and cool over remaining parts of the southeast with patchy rain and scattered showers. Possible isolated thunderstorms over the Capricornia and northern Wide Bay districts. Isolated showers over the Maranoa and near the Carnarvon ranges. Partly cloudy though mostly fine over remaining central districts and through the southern tropics with only isolated light showers. Patchy rain through the northern tropics, tending to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms during the day. Some high cloud developing in the west though remaining fine. A cool to cold day in central and southeast districts. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds over much of the state, strong and gusty along the southern coast. Forecast for Sunday The low offshore of the southern Queensland coast will move southeast, with winds and swells gradually decreasing over southern Queensland waters. Cloud will also decrease over the southeast with only isolated showers expected, mostly near the southern border ranges and exposed coast and islands. A weak upper trough will maintain unstable conditions through the northern tropics with scattered showers and possible isolated storms between about Cairns and Coen. Mostly fine conditions are expected through remaining parts of the tropics and central districts northeast of Clermont with only isolated light showers expected. High cloud will extend further through the southern and central interior though with no rain expected. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected elsewhere. Maximum temperatures will return to near the April average in most areas. Forecast for Monday A new trough is expected to intensify as it enters western Queensland, spreading high cloud east through southern and central parts of the state. Patchy light rain will occur through western districts and the southern central interior under this cloud, with possible isolated thunderstorms. Isolated showers will occur through remaining central districts and the southeast. The unstable airmass through the northern tropics will extend south, with isolated showers increasing to scattered about the east tropical coast and possible isolated thunderstorms inland. Fine and partly cloudy conditions are expected in the North West district. Forecast for Tuesday Some uncertainty is associated with the movement of the trough but at this stage it will most likely move east to extend from the tropical interior into southeast districts. Instability will increase to the east of this trough with showers and thunderstorms expected, particularly about the Capricornia and southeast districts on and east of the Great Dividing Range and through the northern tropics. Dry and mostly sunny conditions will extend through western districts and the southeastern interior in the wake of the trough. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The trough and associated instability should persist over southeastern Queensland on Wednesday before contracting offshore on Thursday. A new high will strengthen as it moves east over the Great Australian Bight towards Tasmania during the outlook period, extending a firm ridge and fresh SE winds along the east Queensland coast from Thursday night. Isolated showers will develop about the east coast in this freshening wind flow. Conditions should remain mostly fine through western Queensland during the outlook period. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Saturday.
