Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Apr 12/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Gale Warning has been issued for coastal waters between
Sandy Cape and Point Danger for Saturday.
A Strong Wind Warning is current between Cooktown and Point Danger, including
Hervey and Moreton Bays.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1028 hPa] in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge through southeast
Australia. A surface trough lies over the northwest Coral Sea. A low lies on the
trough off the tropical east coast of Queensland and low will move slowly
southeast to lie well off the southeast coast of Queensland by late Saturday. An
upper trough over central Queensland is expected to move slowly eastwards,
reaching the east coast of Queensland by late Saturday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Patchy rain areas over the northern and eastern tropics, extending south over
central areas and into the Wide Bay region. Scattered showers about the
remainder of the east coast, more isolated over the adjacent inland. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms over the far northeast of the state. Isolated
showers and possible thunderstorms over the northwest and parts of the southern
interior. Fine and clear over the far southwest. Fresh to strong and gusty SE
winds about the east coast. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
Cloudy with rain areas east of about St Lawrence to Mungindi with moderate to
heavy falls about the coast and ranges in the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast
Coast districts. Early patchy rain clearing from the southern tropics, Central
Coast, Central Highlands and Maranoa districts with mostly fine conditions
developing in its wake. Over the northern tropics, scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms should continue. Fine and mostly sunny in the west of the
state. Cool to cold maximum temperatures in central and southeast districts due
to the cloud cover. Fresh to strong and gusty SE to SE winds about much of the
east coast, easing north of Bowen during the day. Moderate mostly S to SE winds
elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough is expected to move off the east coast, with the surface
trough and low pressure system over the western Coral Sea moving towards the
southeast. There is still some uncertainty with the movement and strength of the
surface trough and low, but the most likely scenario is for isolated to
scattered showers about the southeast parts of the state. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the far northern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny
elsewhere, though high cloud will increase over the southwest and southern
interior due to another upper trough moving into South Australia. Maximum
temperatures returning to nearer the April average in most areas.
Forecast for Monday
Another upper level trough is expected to build over western Queensland.
Cloud should therefore increase over the southwest and southern interior with
patchy light rain and possible isolated thunderstorms slowly spreading
eastwards. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern
tropic. Isolated showers about remaining eastern districts in the weak onshore
flow, which may also extend into the central and southeast interior. Fine and
mostly sunny in the North West district.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough is expected to move eastwards across the state leading to
increasing instability about the south and southeast of the state. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms are likely southeast of a line between St. Lawrence
and Cunnamulla. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the northeast of the
state. Isolated showers elsewhere about the east of the state and southern
interior. Fine and mostly sunny in the west of the state.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The upper trough should clear off the east coast during Wednesday with
instability decreasing. A new high in the Great Australian Bight is expected to
extend a ridge along the east coast with showers returning to most eastern
districts through the outlook period. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are
possible over the far north of the state but much of the interior of the state
should remain fine.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
