Forecast for Thursday Widespread showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the northeast tropics with some moderate to heavy falls likely between about Cooktown and Bowen. Scattered showers about the remainder of the east coast, more isolated over the adjacent inland. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the rest of the northern half of the state and into parts of the central interior. Isolated showers and thunderstorms further west, and fine and mostly sunny conditions over the southwest and southern interior. Fresh to strong SE winds about the east coast, gusty and possibly gale force about exposed coastal areas between Cairns and Bowen. Mainly moderate E to SE winds elsewhere. A Very High Fire danger over the Channel Country and Northwest districts. Forecast for Friday The upper trough over Queensland's interior will continue to move slowly eastwards, while the surface trough over the western Coral Sea will deepen into a low and move to the southeast. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms are likely to continue about much of the east coast as the high now near New Zealand continues to extend a ridge along the coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms through the remaining tropics and central interior, while isolated showers and possible thunderstorms for the northwest and into the southeast interior. Fine and mostly sunny in western and southern interior districts. Forecast for Saturday The upper trough will move towards the east coast further deepening the surface trough over the Coral Sea. There is quite a bit of uncertainty to the development and movement of the surface trough at this stage. A track further out to sea will lead to scattered showers about the east coast and adjacent inland areas. A track closer to the coast will lead to increasing showers about the southeast, with possibly rain areas and thunderstorms developing. As the surface trough moves to the south or southeast showers should begin to ease along the rest of the east coast, apart from the northern tropics where scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms should continue. It will remain fine and mostly sunny in western districts. Forecast for Sunday The upper trough is expected to weaken as it moves oft the east coast, with the surface trough over the Coral Sea moving towards the southeast. There is still uncertainty with the movement and strength of this surface trough, but the most likely scenario is for isolated to scattered showers about the southeast parts of the state, while isolated showers continuing about the far northern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere, though high cloud increasing southern districts. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday A new high in the Great Australian Bight during Monday and Tuesday, extending a ridge along the east coast with showers returning to most eastern districts. A new strong upper trough will develop over South Australia and move towards western Queensland on Tuesday and into the tropical interior on Wednesday. This will produce some high cloud and possibly some patchy rain over the southwest, before increasing showers and thunderstorms in the tropics on Wednesday.. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
