MELBOURNE - Apr 6/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters from Cardwell to St. Lawrence. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will weaken as it moves eastwards towards New Zealand over the weekend, gradually relaxing the ridge. An upper level trough lies over Central Australia and is expected to move across Queensland's southern interior over the weekend. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Cloudy with patchy, mainly light rain areas over the central interior, the Central Coast and Whitsundays, Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett districts. Scattered showers about the remainder of the east coast. Isolated showers developing over inland areas during the afternoon, except for the Channel Country where isolated early morning showers should clear to a fine though partly cloudy day. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf Country and over Cape York Peninsula. Temperatures below the April average over much of central Queensland. Moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast, mainly moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. Forecast for Monday The upper level trough should move off the southern Queensland coast but an onshore wind flow will still be able to produce scattered showers about most of the eastern districts. Showers and thunderstorms tending to rain areas about the North Tropical Coast and also over Cape York Peninsula. More isolated showers and thunderstorms over the remainder of the far north and about the Gulf Country coast. Isolated showers over the northern interior and about the western districts. Fine and mostly sunny over the southern and central interior. Forecast for Tuesday A new high should move into the Tasman Sea, maintaining a ridge of high pressure, fresh SE winds and scattered showers along Queensland's east coast. More widespread showers, possible thunderstorms and areas of rain about the northeast coast, with some moderate to locally heavy falls possible. Isolated showers about the southeast interior, central interior and the northwest. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Forecast for Wednesday The upper level trough should strengthen as it extends from the southeast to the northwest of the state, and it, along with a deepening surface trough just off the northeast coast should result in widespread showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over the northeast tropics and some moderate to heavy falls between about Cooktown and Townsville. Scattered showers about the remainder of the east coast in the onshore flow, and the upper trough may allow isolated thunderstorms to develop over the state's southeast. Mostly fine over the central and southeast interior except for some isolated, mainly light showers. Fine and mostly sunny over the western districts. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The upper trough should remain over Queensland's interior late in the week, and it, along with a continuing onshore flow should result in mainly scattered showers about the eastern districts. More widespread showers and areas of rain about the northeast coast on Thursday as the surface trough persists in the region, though rain should ease on Friday as the trough moves away to the southeast. Areas of rain and isolated storms over Cape York Peninsula on Thursday, easing later in the week back to isolated showers and storms. Fine and mostly sunny over the west. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Sunday.
