Weather Situation
A high in the Great Australian Bight extends a ridge along the coast of
Queensland which will persist during Thursday as the high moves into the Tasman
Sea. A surface trough lies over the central interior of Queensland. An upper
level trough lies over southeast Queensland, enhancing instability over this
region, and this instability will persist about the southeast during Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the
southeast. Isolated showers in the northeast of the state, tending scattered
between about Cooktown and Townsville. Isolated thunderstorms over Cape York
Peninsula, the Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts.
Fine and mostly clear elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE winds about the east coast
and in the west of the state. Light to moderate mostly SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Thursday
Isolated to scattered showers about eastern districts with scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms about the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and
eastern Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms may also develop about the southern Central Highlands, western
Darling Downs and the Maranoa. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the
northern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny conditions through western districts and
the central and southern interior. Daytime temperatures will cool slightly
through the southeast due to the strengthening S to SE wind flow and increasing
cloud cover. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds about the east coast, moderate
SE to NE winds elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in the North West
district.
Forecast for Friday
A new upper level trough will develop to the west of the state, increasing
cloud through far western Queensland though with little to no rain. The high
will move east into the Tasman Sea, maintaining a firm ridge along the east
Queensland coast. Fresh to strong and gusty SE'ly winds and isolated to
scattered showers will persist about eastern districts. Isolated thunderstorms
remain possible through the northern Peninsula and Gulf of Carpentaria coast
under a moist and marginally unstable airmass. Fine and mostly sunny conditions
are expected through the central west. Maximum temperatures will be 2 to 4
degrees below the April average over the southeast of the state and along the
central coast due to the cool wind flow and shower activity.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper level trough will move into southwest parts of Queensland,
increasing the cloud further through western and central inland parts of the
state with little to no rain. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms though
are expected over the southern interior. The high will remain slow moving in the
Tasman Sea, maintaining a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. Fresh to
strong and gusty SE'ly winds and isolated to scattered showers will persist
about eastern districts. Isolated thunderstorms remain possible through the
northern Peninsula and Gulf of Carpentaria coast under a moist and marginally
unstable airmass. Fine and mostly sunny conditions are expected through the
central west. Maximum temperatures will be 2 to 4 degrees below the April
average over the southeast of the state and along the central coast due to the
cool wind flow and shower activity.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper level trough is expected to move eastwards across the southern
interior with cloud and patchy rain spreading east across much of the central
and southern parts of the state. Isolated thunderstorms are possible about the
southern and southeast interior in the unstable airmass. The high near New
Zealand should weaken but the fresh onshore flow will continue about the east
coast leading to scattered showers about the east coast and adjacent inland.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms should persist about the Gulf of Carpentaria
coast with scattered showers and thunderstorms through Torres Strait.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The new upper level trough should contract into far southeast Queensland
during Monday, generating showers, patchy rain and possible storms with its
passage. A new high should move east across the Southern Ocean and enter the
Tasman Sea on Wednesday. This should maintain a fresh onshore flow and scattered
showers about eastern districts. Cloud is expected to increase through Torres
Strait and Cape York Peninsula during the period, with showers and storms
becoming more widespread. Much of the interior of the state should remain fine
and mostly sunny through the outlook period. Maximum temperatures will remain
generally cooler than the April average in the east and warmer in the west.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
