Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 29/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Flood Warning is current for the Balonne River.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high east of New Zealand extends a weakening ridge along the east
Queensland coast. A surface trough lies from the northwest of the state through
the southern interior and to the southeast Queensland coast. A weak monsoon
trough lies over the northern reaches of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
Isolated showers about the tropical east coast. Cloudy over southern Queensland,
but generally only isolated showers, mainly over the southeast coast and
southeast interior. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate southeast to northeast
winds across most of the state, fresh at times about the southeast and far
northeast coasts.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers from the Fraser and Capricorn coasts into the southern
central highlands and southern interior, with the chance of a few thunderstorms
near the Carnarvon Ranges. Mostly cloudy with isolated showers over the
Southeast Coast district, and also about the east coast north of about
Townsville. Becoming cloudy with patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms late in
the day about the far southwest of the state. Fine and mostly sunny over the
northern interior, although isolated showers and thunderstorms are again likely
near the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Light to moderate southeast to northeast
winds across most of the state, fresh at times about the southeast and far
northeast coasts. A Very High fire danger over the western Channel Country.
Forecast for Sunday
A relatively strong upper level trough moving eastwards across southern
Queensland should support a band of cloud with areas of rain, scattered showers
and isolated thunderstorms across the southern districts. Ahead of this line, a
surface trough over the western Darling Downs into the Maranoa and southern
Central Highlands is likely to become the focus of scattered thunderstorm
development during the day, some of which may become severe, and this activity
should then move eastwards towards the coast during the afternoon and evening.
Some moderate to locally heavy falls are likely with this activity. A weak
onshore wind flow should produce mainly isolated showers about the eastern
tropics, and isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible about the Gulf of
Carpentaria coast. Fine and mostly sunny over the northern tropical interior.
Cool in the cloudy conditions across the south of the state.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough should push northwards across the state during the day,
resulting in the areas of rain, scattered showers and isolated storms moving
into the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia and Wide Bay and Burnett
districts. Early rain areas breaking up to showers during the day about the
southeast and the southeast interior. Fine and mostly sunny across the remainder
of the state except for the chance of some isolated showers and storms about the
Gulf of Carpentaria coast and isolated showers about the tropical east coast.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough should move well off the eat coast, with the mid level cloud
and rain areas clearing offshore. However, scattered showers and thunderstorms
will remain likely near the surface trough over the central coast and central
inland. Lingering instability over the southeast is likely to lead to scattered
showers over the area, while some destabilisation provided by the upper trough
should support isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics. It
should be fine, sunny and relatively cool in southerly air flow over the west of
the state.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
A large high pressure system will become established near Tasmania during the
outlook period, with a firm ridge developing along the east coast of Queensland.
This pattern will favour fresh to strong Trade winds with isolated to scattered
showers along the east coast and nearby inland, with fine and mostly sunny
conditions over the interior of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
are possible about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Temperatures are likely to be
near of slightly below average over most of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
