MELBOURNE - Mar 27/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Flood Warning is current for the Balonne River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. A weakening surface trough lies over the far southwest of the state, while a much stronger surface trough will approach the southwest tonight. The monsoon trough will remain slow moving through the Torres Strait, connected to a low over the "Top End" of the Northern Territory. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Widespread showers, storms and areas of rain over northern Cape York Peninsula and spreading to the northwest Gulf Country. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics. Scattered showers about the east coast, tending isolated about the adjacent inland. Isolated afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms about the Channel Country during the afternoon. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Above average temperatures over the west of the state. Moderate SE to NE winds. A very high fire danger in the Channel Country. Forecast for Thursday The monsoon trough is expected to remain through the Torres Strait, connecting to a the low over the "Top End". This will lead to further widespread showers, storms and areas of rain over northern Cape York Peninsula, and spreading over the northwest Gulf Country. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics. Generally isolated showers are expected along the remainder of the east coast in the moist onshore airflow. The new surface trough will continue to move east over the southwest of Queensland, with cooler conditions, patchy rain areas, isolated showers and thunderstorms over southwest parts. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Above average temperatures over the west of the state. Forecast for Friday The low over the far north of the Northern Territory is expected to remain slow moving with the monsoon trough likely to persist over the far north of the state. This will lead to further showers, storms and rain areas over northern Cape York Peninsula and in to the northwest Gulf Country. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics. A southerly change is likely to move north through far southern waters and combine with an upper trough over southeast Queensland to produce isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southeast. Isolated showers over the remainder of the east coast. The surface trough over the interior is expected to stretch from the northwest of the state to the southeast interior with isolated showers and thunderstorms and patchy rain areas for much of the southern and southeast interior. Cool maximum temperatures under the cloud across much of southern and western Queensland. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Forecast for Saturday The trough is expected to lie from the northwest of the state to the southeast interior whilst an upper trough should move across central Australia. Cloudy and cool conditions with patchy rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected for the southwest of the state, with isolated afternoon showers over the southern interior. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms about the southeast of the state. Only isolated showers elsewhere about the east coast in the weak onshore flow. Showers and thunderstorms should persist across the far northern tropics. Fine and partly cloudy conditions elsewhere. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday There is some uncertainty for the outlook period, but an upper trough is likely to move eastwards across the south of the state on Sunday before clearing off the southeast coast on Monday. The surface trough should also continue moving east over southern Queensland, and is likely to reach the southeast of the state on Sunday and Monday. Showers and thunderstorms and rain areas are expected to develop near and east of this trough during Sunday and Monday, before clearing offshore to leave isolated showers about the east coast on Tuesday. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should persist across the northern tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
