MELBOURNE - Mar 23/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Flood Warning is current for the Balonne River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A ridge of high pressure extends along the east coast of Queensland from a high pressure system near New Zealand. A surface trough over the southwest is expected to drift eastwards across the southern interior over the next few days. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Scattered showers and gusty thunderstorms over the west and southern interior, though fine in the far southwest. Fine and mostly clear over remaining areas. Moderate SW to SE winds over the Channel Country. Moderate SE to NE winds over the remainder of the state, fresh at times about the east coast. Forecast for Sunday Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics, with scattered showers about the North Tropical Coast district. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms in a band from the northwest to the southeast of the state. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Maximum temperatures above average in the west and southern interior. Moderate SW to SE winds over the southwest. Moderate SE to NE winds over the remainder of the state, fresh at times about the tropical east coast. A Very High Fire danger for the Channel Country. Forecast for Monday A fresh onshore wind flow and the monsoon trough moving southwards towards far northern Queensland is expected to maintain widespread showers and areas of rain for the northern Peninsula, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere about the northern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny over most of the remainder of the state under the influence of a mid level ridge. A weak upper level trough should linger over the southeast of the state, combining with a weak surface trough to produce isolated showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. Above average temperatures over the west of the state. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon trough moving slowly southwards about the northern Peninsula is expected to continue producing widespread showers and areas of rain to the far north, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics. Isolated showers elsewhere along the east coast, mostly north of about Mackay. Isolated showers and thunderstorms developing during the afternoon and evening in the southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Above average temperatures over the west of the state. Forecast for Wednesday The monsoon trough is expected to remain over far northern Queensland, with widespread showers and areas of rain continuing over the far north, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics. Isolated showers elsewhere along the east coast, mostly north of about Mackay. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. Above average temperatures over the west of the state. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The ridge is expected to persist over eastern Queensland, maintaining isolated showers about the coast, possibly spreading to nearby inland areas during the day. Showers, storms and possible rain areas are expected over the northern tropics. A trough will move into western Queensland late Thursday and slowly move eastwards, reaching eastern Queensland on Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop once again near the trough during the afternoon. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday.
