Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 22/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Flood Warning is current for the Balonne River.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A ridge of high pressure along Queensland's east coast is expected to weaken
during the weekend. A surface trough is forming to the north of the state, and
another surface trough is expected to drift eastwards across the southern
interior during the weekend.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the eastern tropics, more
widespread about the east coast north of about Cairns. Fine and mostly sunny
over the remaining eastern districts. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms
over the southwest and southern interior, extending into the southeast and
southern central interior during the afternoon and evening. Fine and mostly
sunny over the central west, and mainly isolated showers and thunderstorms over
the northern tropics. Maximum temperatures above average in the west and
southern interior. Moderate NW to SW winds over the Channel Country. Moderate SE
to NE winds over the remainder of the state, fresh at times about the east
coast. A Very High Fire danger over the southern interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The trough to the north of the state should help maintain scattered showers,
isolated storms and areas of rain over the state's far northeast coast, north of
about Cooktown. Scattered showers and isolated storms are also expected over
Cape York Peninsula, the Gulf of Carpentaria coast and the North Tropical Coast
and Tablelands. Fine and mostly sunny over much of the remainder of the state,
though an upper trough will work with a surface trough to produce showers and
gusty storms over the southern districts, more widespread about the Maranoa and
Warrego district. Above average maximum temperatures in the west and south.
Forecast for Monday
A fresh onshore wind flow should maintain widespread showers and areas of
rain about the coast north of about Cooktown, whilst the remainder of the
Peninsula district and parts of the Gulf of Carpentaria coast should experience
scattered showers and isolated storms. Fine and mostly sunny over most of the
remainder of the state under the influence of a mid level ridge. A weak upper
level trough should linger over the state's southeast, and it, along with a weak
surface trough, could produce isolated showers and storms over the region.
Above average temperatures over the west of the state.
Forecast for Tuesday
Fine and mostly sunny across most of the state under the influence of a ridge
of high pressure. The ridge should gradually strengthen and allow humidity
levels to increase a little about the southeast and central coast, but these
regions will nonetheless be fine except for some isolated showers. Scattered
showers about the coast north of about Mackay, more widespread and tending to
rain periods north of Cooktown. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the
far northern tropics. Above average temperatures over the west of the state.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The ridge is expected to persist over eastern Queensland, maintaining
isolated showers about the coast, possibly spreading to nearby inland areas
during the day. Scattered showers and isolated storms are expected over the
northern tropics, and the rest of the state should stay fine and mostly
sunny.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
