MELBOURNE - Mar 21/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Flood Warning is current for the Balonne River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1033 hPa] over New Zealand extends a ridge along Queensland's east coast. A surface trough is lying over far western Queensland, and another surface trough lies to the north of the state. Forecast for the rest of Friday Mainly isolated showers about the southeast coast, southeast tropics and central interior. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the northern tropics, more widespread about the north tropical coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southwest and southern interior. Fine in a band from the northwest to the southeast interior. Maximum temperatures above average in the southwest. Moderate SE to NE winds over most of the state, fresh at times about the east coast. Moderate NE to NW winds over the Channel Country. A Very High Fire danger over the southern interior. Forecast for Saturday The ridge along Queensland's east coast should weaken, allowing the southeast to be fine though partly cloudy. Mainly fine with just the chance of some showers about the coast between about Mackay and the Sunshine Coast. More widespread showers about the remainder of the east coast, particularly north of about Ingham due to an approaching tropical trough. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the northern tropics. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms about the southwest. Fine and mostly sunny over the central interior. Maximum temperatures above average in the west and southern interior. Forecast for Sunday The ridge along Queensland's east coast should continue to weaken, and the showers should therefore clear from the central and southeast coast areas. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the state's far north, more widespread along the coast north of about Cairns. The rest of the state should be fine and mostly sunny except for the southern and southeast interior where scattered showers and isolated storms are expected. Maximum temperatures above average in the west and south. Forecast for Monday An upper level trough should lie over a weak surface trough over the southeast interior, and isolated showers and storms are expected to form during the afternoon over the region as a result. The rest of the state should be fine and mostly sunny, except for the far northern tropics where scattered showers and isolated storms are expected, with more widespread activity likely north of about Cairns. More isolated showers and storms are also possible about the remainder of the tropical east coast. Above average temperatures over the west of the state. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A weak ridge is expected to persist along the east coast, pushing mainly isolated showers across the east coast, and more widespread showers over the far northeast coast. Instability is likely to persist over the northern tropics and the Gulf Country early in the new week with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected. Fine and mostly sunny across the remainder of the state. Maximum temperatures remaining above average in the west. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
