web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
In the early hours of this morning ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim [1007 hPa] crossed
the North Tropical Coast near Innisfail as a weak low, and is expected to
dissipate completely as it tracks westwards during today. A high [1030 hPa]
over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the southern and central coast of
Queensland. A weak surface trough is lying over far western Queensland. An upper
level trough is expected to move off the southeast coast this morning.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the
Gulf Country. Cloudy with scattered showers, some rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms about the coast and ranges between about Cardwell and Bowen.
Cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of
the eastern tropics, and areas of patchy morning rain near the Capricornia
coast. Just the chance of some isolated showers and storms about the central
interior. Mainly fine except for some isolated showers about the state's
southeast, and some isolated showers and storms about the state's southwest
during the afternoon and evening. Fine and mostly sunny in the western
interior. Mild temperatures in eastern districts. Moderate SE to NE winds,
fresh at times about the east coast. A Very High fire danger over the southern
interior.
Forecast for Friday
The high should lie to the east of New Zealand with a weakening ridge of high
pressure along the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers about the
southeast coast, southeast tropics and central interior. Showers tending to rain
at times about the north tropical coast. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms about the northern tropics. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
over the southwest and southern interior associated with a surface trough. Fine
in a band from the northwest to the southeast interior. Maximum temperatures
above average in the southwest.
Forecast for Saturday
The ridge along Queensland's east coast should weaken, allowing the southeast
to clear to fine, though partly cloudy conditions. Mainly isolated showers about
most of the remainder of the eastern districts, though more widespread showers
are expected to tend to rain areas north of about Cooktown as a trough moves
toward Cape York Peninsula from the Coral Sea. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the northern tropics, and fine and mostly sunny over the
central west and northwest districts. Scattered showers and isolated storms
about the southern interior. Maximum temperatures above average in the west and
southern interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The ridge along Queensland's east coast should continue to weaken, allowing
the southeast to remain fine and the showers about much of the remainder of the
east coast to become more isolated. Showers tending to rain areas about the far
northeast coast north of about Cooktown. Scattered showers and isolated storms
about the Gulf of Carpentaria coast, and also over the southern interior. Fine
and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state. Maximum temperatures above
average in the west and south.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A weak ridge is expected to persist along the east coast, with an associated
easing in the onshore wind flow shower activity about the southern tropical
coast. Widespread showers and rain areas still expected north of Cooktown early
in the week, though easing during the week. A restrengthening of the ridge
during Tuesday should allow showers to return to most of the east coast.
Instability is likely to persist over the northern tropics and the Gulf Country
early in the new week with scattered showers and thunderstorms likely. Fine and
mostly sunny across the remainder of the state. Maximum temperatures remaining
above average in the west.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
