Weather Situation
At 1pm EST Wednesday, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim [1008 hPa] was located about
210 kilometres northeast of Townsville and moving west-northwest. Ex-Tropical
Cyclone Tim is expected to continue move west-northwest towards the north
tropical Queensland coast before crossing the coast as a weak low during
Thursday morning. A high [1031 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge
along the southern and central coast of Queensland. A weak surface trough is
lying over far western Queensland. An upper level trough over eastern Queensland
is expected to move off the southeast Queensland coast early Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the
Gulf Country. Scattered showers about the North Tropical Coast district. Cloudy
with scattered showers, areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms about the
Capricornia, Central Coast and Whitsundays, Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts
with moderate to locally heavy falls. Scattered showers and patchy rain areas
about remaining central districts and parts of the southeast. Isolated showers
over the southeast interior. Fresh to strong and gusty SE winds from the
southern tropical coast to the southern Queensland coast. Mostly moderate SE to
NE winds over most of the remainder of the state.
Forecast for Thursday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula, the
Gulf Country and far northwest of the state. Cloudy with widespread showers,
rain areas and isolated thunderstorms about the coast and ranges between about
Cooktown and Ingham with some heavy falls. Cloudy with scattered showers, areas
of rain and isolated thunderstorms over the remainder of the eastern tropics
with moderate to locally heavy falls about the coast and ranges mainly in the
morning. Scattered showers and patchy rain areas over remaining central
districts, with isolated afternoon thunderstorms over the central interior.
Isolated showers over southeast districts, tending to scattered showers about
the Southeast Coast in the morning. A cool day under the cloud in eastern
districts. Fresh and gusty E to SE winds along most of the east coast. Mostly
moderate SE to NE winds over the remainder of the state, tending fresh N to NE
over the southwest. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country, Maranoa and
Warrego districts.
Forecast for Friday
The high should lie to the east of New Zealand with a weakening ridge of high
pressure along the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers about the east
coast north of the Sunshine Coast and spreading into the central interior. These
showers will remain more frequent about the central coast, and tend to rain at
times about the north tropical coast with some moderate falls. Scattered showers
and thunderstorms to continue about Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country,
though rain areas may develop over eastern Cape York Peninsula due to an upper
level trough. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the southwest and southern
interior associated with a surface trough. Fine in the far southeast of the
state. Maximum temperatures above average in the southwest.
Forecast for Saturday
The high is expected to move further east of New Zealand with the ridge along
the east Queensland coast continuing to weaken. Isolated showers about the east
coast north of Fraser Island, increasing to scattered showers about the north
tropical coast. A trough is expected to move west from the Coral Sea and affect
Cape York Peninsula with an increase in showers and thunderstorms and
maintaining areas of rain over most of this district. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms are also likely to spread over the northwest of the state
as the surface trough persists over the southwest and southern interior, with
isolated showers and thunderstorms expected over the latter areas. Fine over the
southeast. Maximum temperatures above average in the west and southern interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to be located well east of New Zealand with the ridge
along the east Queensland coast continuing to weaken. Isolated showers about the
east coast north of Fraser Island, increasing to scattered showers about the
north tropical coast. The trough over the far north is expected to have moved
over Cape York Peninsula, maintaining showers, rain areas and thunderstorms.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely over the Gulf Country
and northwest of the state. In the south, the inland surface trough is likely to
extend eastwards across the southern interior, with isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the southwest and southern interior spreading into the
southeast inland. Maximum temperatures above average in the west and south.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A weak ridge is expected to persist along the east coast, with an associated
easing in the onshore wind flow and isolated coastal showers, mainly in the
tropics initially. The surface trough is expected to move over the Southeast
Coast late Monday or Tuesday with isolated showers and thunderstorms. The ridge
is then likely to strengthen a little on Wednesday allowing showers to return to
most of the east coast once again. Instability is likely to persist over the
northern tropics and the Gulf Country during the period with scattered showers
and thunderstorms likely. Maximum temperatures remaining above average in the
west.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
