At 4 am EST, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim [1002 hPa] was situated around 330
kilometres northeast of Mackay and is expected to move slowly west-northwest
over the next few days. A high [1027 hPa] over southeast Australia extends a
firm ridge over the southern and central coasts of Queensland. A weak surface
trough stretches from the Gulf Country down to the southern interior.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the
Gulf Country. Isolated showers about the North Tropical Coast district.
Scattered showers and rain areas with isolated thunderstorms about the Central
Coast district with some moderate to possibly heavy falls developing. Scattered
showers and patchy rain areas also about the southeast tropics, Capricornia and
the Wide Bay and Burnett region. Isolated showers about the far southeast and
also about the central and southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny in the west
of the state. Fresh to strong SE winds about the, Wide Bay and southern
Capricornia coast. Strong to gale force SE winds about the central coast and
northern Capricornia Coast with damaging wind gusts about the exposed coast and
islands between Bowen and Yeppoon. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds over most of
the rest of the state. Temperatures will be several degrees below average in the
cloudy conditions in the east of the state.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high should continue east across the Tasman Sea and maintain a ridge
along Queensland's east coast. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim should continue to move
west-northwest and approach the North Tropical Coast late in the day. Scattered
gusty showers, isolated thunderstorms and area of rain are expected between
Cardwell and St. Lawrence with moderate falls possible. Scattered showers and
patchy rain about the remainder of the eastern districts between Cairns and the
Wide Bay, extending into the central interior. Isolated showers about the
southeast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula
and the Gulf Country. Mostly fine in the west with only isolated afternoon
showers developing in the Channel Country. Cool under the cloud in eastern
districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The high should move over New Zealand whilst maintaining a strong ridge along
Queensland's east coast. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim should weaken is it moves
westwards across Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country, producing scattered
showers and thunderstorms over the region. Scattered showers and patchy rain
areas along the east coast and nearby inland areas between about Gladstone and
Cooktown. Isolated showers over the remaining eastern districts and extending
into the central interior. Mostly fine in the rest of state apart from isolated
showers and thunderstorms in the far southwest near the inland trough. Remaining
cool under the cloud in central eastern districts.
Forecast for Friday
The high should lie to the east of New Zealand with a weakening ridge of high
pressure along the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers about the east
coast north of the Sunshine Coast and spreading into the central interior.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf
Country. Isolated showers and storms about the far southwest associated with a
surface trough. Fine in the far southeast of the state.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The ridge should continue to weaken about the east coast, and an associated
easing in the onshore wind flow should allow much of the east coast to be mainly
fine except for the chance of some isolated showers. A tropical trough
approaching from the Coral Sea may cause showers to increase during the weekend
about Cape York Peninsula, whilst most of the remainder of the state should be
fine and mostly sunny except for some isolated showers and storms across the
southern districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Tuesday.
