MELBOURNE - Mar 18/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds is current for exposed coastal areas and islands between Bowen and Yeppoon. A Gale Warning is current for coastal waters between Townsville and Yeppoon. A Strong Wind Warning is current for waters between Cardwell and Townsville and between Yeppoon and Double Island Point, including Hervey Bay. Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation At 4 am EST, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim [1002 hPa] was situated around 330 kilometres northeast of Mackay and is expected to move slowly west-northwest over the next few days. A high [1027 hPa] over southeast Australia extends a firm ridge over the southern and central coasts of Queensland. A weak surface trough stretches from the Gulf Country down to the southern interior. Forecast for the rest of Tuesday Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Isolated showers about the North Tropical Coast district. Scattered showers and rain areas with isolated thunderstorms about the Central Coast district with some moderate to possibly heavy falls developing. Scattered showers and patchy rain areas also about the southeast tropics, Capricornia and the Wide Bay and Burnett region. Isolated showers about the far southeast and also about the central and southern interior. Fine and mostly sunny in the west of the state. Fresh to strong SE winds about the, Wide Bay and southern Capricornia coast. Strong to gale force SE winds about the central coast and northern Capricornia Coast with damaging wind gusts about the exposed coast and islands between Bowen and Yeppoon. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds over most of the rest of the state. Temperatures will be several degrees below average in the cloudy conditions in the east of the state. Forecast for Wednesday The high should continue east across the Tasman Sea and maintain a ridge along Queensland's east coast. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim should continue to move west-northwest and approach the North Tropical Coast late in the day. Scattered gusty showers, isolated thunderstorms and area of rain are expected between Cardwell and St. Lawrence with moderate falls possible. Scattered showers and patchy rain about the remainder of the eastern districts between Cairns and the Wide Bay, extending into the central interior. Isolated showers about the southeast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Mostly fine in the west with only isolated afternoon showers developing in the Channel Country. Cool under the cloud in eastern districts. Forecast for Thursday The high should move over New Zealand whilst maintaining a strong ridge along Queensland's east coast. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim should weaken is it moves westwards across Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms over the region. Scattered showers and patchy rain areas along the east coast and nearby inland areas between about Gladstone and Cooktown. Isolated showers over the remaining eastern districts and extending into the central interior. Mostly fine in the rest of state apart from isolated showers and thunderstorms in the far southwest near the inland trough. Remaining cool under the cloud in central eastern districts. Forecast for Friday The high should lie to the east of New Zealand with a weakening ridge of high pressure along the east coast of Queensland. Isolated showers about the east coast north of the Sunshine Coast and spreading into the central interior. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Isolated showers and storms about the far southwest associated with a surface trough. Fine in the far southeast of the state. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The ridge should continue to weaken about the east coast, and an associated easing in the onshore wind flow should allow much of the east coast to be mainly fine except for the chance of some isolated showers. A tropical trough approaching from the Coral Sea may cause showers to increase during the weekend about Cape York Peninsula, whilst most of the remainder of the state should be fine and mostly sunny except for some isolated showers and storms across the southern districts.
