MELBOURNE - Mar 18/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Gale Warning for coastal waters between Bowen and Yeppoon. Strong Wind Warning for remaining waters between Cardwell and Double Island Point, including Hervey Bay. Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system over Victoria is extending a ridge up Queensland's east coast, while a weak surface trough stretches from the Gulf Country down to the southern interior. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim is near stationary off Queensland's central coast, but is expected to approach the north tropical coast over the next few days. Forecast for the rest of Monday Fine over most of the state. Mainly fine except for some isolated showers about parts of the east coast and nearby inland areas, and some isolated showers and storms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Fresh to strong SE winds about the Sunshine, Wide Bay and Capricornia coast, strong to gale force about the central coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the rest of the state. Forecast for Tuesday Fine over most of the state's interior except for some isolated, mainly light afternoon showers over the southern and central interior. Isolated showers and storms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country, and mainly fine with some isolated showers about the north tropical coast district. Scattered showers with some rain periods and some moderate to possibly heavy falls about the central coast. Scattered showers also about the southeast tropics and the Wide Bay and Burnett region, and mainly fine with some isolated light showers about the southeast. Fresh to strong SE winds about the Sunshine, Wide Bay and Capricornia coast, strong to gale force about the central coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over most of the rest of the state. Forecast for Wednesday The high should move east over the Tasman Sea and maintain a ridge along Queensland's east coast, whilst ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim should approach the north tropical coast causing scattered gusty showers, isolated storms and periods of rain with some moderate to heavy falls. More isolated showers about the remainder of the eastern districts and the central interior, and some scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Fine and mostly sunny in the southwest. Forecast for Thursday The high should move over New Zealand whilst maintaining a strong ridge along Queensland's east coast. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim should weaken is it moves westwards across Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country, producing scattered showers and isolated storms over the region. Scattered showers along the east coast and nearby inland areas between about Mackay and Cooktown, easing during the day. Isolated showers over the remaining eastern districts. It will be mostly fine in the rest of state apart from possible isolated showers and thunderstorms in the far southwest near the inland trough. Forecast for Friday A weakening ridge of high pressure should push some mainly isolated showers across the central and northeast coast, spreading into the nearby inland areas during the day. Isolated showers and storms are also possible about Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country, and fine and mostly sunny over the remainder of the state except for some isolated showers and storms about the far southwest associated with a surface trough. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The ridge should continue to weaken about the east coast, and an associated easing in the onshore wind flow should allow much of the east coast to be mainly fine except for the chance of some isolated showers. A tropical trough approaching from the Coral Sea may cause showers to increase during the weekend about Cape York Peninsula, whilst most of the remainder of the state should be fine and mostly sunny except for some isolated showers and storms across the southern districts. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
