Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies over northern Cape York Peninsula to Ex-Tropical
Cyclone Tim which at 4pm EST was about 790 kilometres east southeast of Cairns
and moving south southwest at 8 kilometres per hour. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Tim is
expected to continue moving southwest and weaken to a tropical low later today,
and then move in a general west-northwest direction towards the tropical
Queensland coast early in the new week. A trough and strong S'ly wind change is
expected to move over far southern Queensland waters this afternoon and evening,
extending further northwards on Monday. An inland trough will slowly move west
over the next few days.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Isolated showers and thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and northern
parts of the Gulf Country. Isolated showers in the southeast, chiefly about the
coast. Fine elsewhere. Moderate NE to NW winds along the southern east coast,
becoming strong S to SE behind the southerly change. Moderate to fresh SW to SE
winds about the remaining east coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds
elsewhere. A Severe fire danger in the Channel Country. A Very High fire danger
in the Maranoa and Warrego.
Forecast for Monday
Isolated showers about most parts of the east Queensland coast and adjacent
inland areas. Showers will increase during the afternoon and evening about the
Central and Capricornia coasts as the weakened ex-Tropical Cyclone drifts closer
to the coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms should persist over
Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Strong to gale SE force winds alone
the coast south of Cardwell. Light to moderate NE to SE winds elsewhere. A Very
High fire danger in the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego district.
Forecast for Tuesday
At this stage, the weakened ex-Tropical Cyclone is likely to move
west-northwest off the central coast leading to strong to gale force winds,
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, between about Townsville and St
Lawrence. Isolated showers are likely to spread along the remaining east
Queensland coast and inland into the eastern interior. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms should persist over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf
Country. Isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms will be
possible east of the inland trough, especially in the south as an weak upper
trough pushes over the area. It will continue to be fine and sunny in the
west.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will move east over the Tasman Sea maintaining a ridge along the
east Queensland coast. The ex-Tropical Cyclone will continue to weaken as it
moves towards or onto the tropical east coast. Isolated showers and fresh to
strong and possibly gale force SE winds will continue about the east coast,
showers will tend scattered with isolated thunderstorms and possible rain areas
between Cairns and Rockhampton. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
should persist over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country. Isolated afternoon
and evening showers and thunderstorms will be possible near the inland trough.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will move over New Zealand maintaining the strong ridge along the
east Queensland coast. At this stage, there is still uncertainty associated
with the outlook for the tropics with forecasts highly dependent on the movement
of the tropical low. At this stage it is most likely the tropical low will to
continue to weaken as it moves west towards the southern Gulf of Carpentaria.
Scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and possible rain areas are likely
near the tropical low and along the east coast and adjacent inland areas between
Mackay and Cooktown. Isolated showers will persist in the remaining eastern
districts. It will be mostly fine in the rest of state apart from possible
isolated showers and thunderstorms in the far southwest near the inland
trough.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high will continue to move east away from New Zealand, maintaining a
strong ridge, fresh to strong SE winds, and showers along most of the east
Queensland coast and adjacent inland. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms should persist over Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf Country
possible increasing late period as a trough moves west towards Torres Strait. An
approaching surface trough may also initiate isolated showers and thunderstorms
in the southwestern and western parts of the state. Fine and sunny conditions
should continue throughout most of the rest of the state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
