Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Mar 14/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Weather Situation
The monsoon trough lies cross northern Cape York Peninsula to Tropical
Cyclone "Tim" [984 hPa], which at 4am EST was about 700 kilometres
east-northeast of Cairns and moving east-southeast. Tropical Cyclone "Tim" is
expected to continue moving east-southeast over the northwest Coral Sea during
the next day or so. Tropical Cyclone Sandra was moving south over the northern
Tasman Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula, with
more isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf Country. Isolated showers
about the north tropical coast and along exposed parts of the southern
Queensland coast. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere. A very warm day in the
northwest. Powerful surf along exposed beaches in Queensland's southeast, easing
later in the day. Moderate to fresh SE to SW winds along the east coast, tending
mostly moderate SE to NE elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
Tropical Cyclone "Tim" is likely to become slow moving but remain well off
the tropical east coast and dry air across Queensland should result in fine and
mostly sunny conditions persisting across most of the state, except for
scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the
eastern parts of the Gulf Country. Isolated showers may also occur about parts
of the southern tropical, Capricornia and southern coasts. Daytime temperatures
should be above average over the northwest.
Forecast for Sunday
At this stage, Tropical Cyclone "Tim" is likely to weaken off the tropical
east coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms should persist over
Cape York Peninsula and the eastern parts of the Gulf Country. A trough and
southerly change is likely to bring late showers to southeast districts, after
some early morning fog patches. There is the chance of isolated thunderstorms,
particularly near the southern border ranges. Dry air across the remainder of
Queensland should result in fine and mostly sunny conditions persisting across
most of the remainder of the state. Daytime temperatures should be above average
over the northwest and southeast of the state, but cooler in the southwest.
Forecast for Monday
The trough and southerly change is likely to spread north along the east
coast as a new high moves over southeast Australia and towards the Tasman Sea.
As a result, showers are likely to spread along most of the east Queensland
coast and inland into the eastern interior. Cooler conditions will spread to the
southeast of the state in the wake of the change. At this stage, the weakened
ex-Tropical Cyclone is likely to drift back towards the tropical coast as a low,
with an increase in showers, rain and isolated thunderstorms and strong and
gusty winds, but there is still some uncertainty associated with this. An inland
trough is likely to generate isolated afternoon and evening showers over the
southern interior. Fine in the west of the state.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The high is likely to move across the Tasman Sea during the period with a
strong ridge and gusty SE winds along most of the east Queensland coast with
showers, spreading into the eastern interior. At this stage, there is still
uncertainty associated with the outlook for the tropics with forecasts highly
dependent on the movement of the tropical low. Early indications suggest that
the tropical low is likely to have moved cover the tropical coast with
widespread showers, areas of rain and some thunderstorms with some heavy falls,
possibly spreading into the adjacent eastern tropical interior. These conditions
are likely to contract northwards and ease late in the week. An inland trough
may generate isolated afternoon and evening showers and possible thunderstorms
over the central and southern interior. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the far north. Fine in the far west of the state.
