Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for east coastal waters from
Torres Strait to Cairns.
Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams.

web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high [1018 hPa] over the Tasman Sea is maintaining a weak ridge along
Queensland's east coast. The monsoon trough lies cross northern Cape York
Peninsula to a low [999 hPa] in the northwest Coral Sea. The low is expected to
move east-southeast over the northwest Coral Sea during the next couple of days
and is likely to develop into a Tropical Cyclone during Thursday night or Friday
morning. Tropical Cyclone Sandra, well east of Queensland, is moving south and
is expected to remain well off the Australian mainland as it moves into the
northern Tasman Sea.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over northern Cape York
Peninsula, with more isolated showers and thunderstorms about the Gulf Country.
Showers easing about the north tropical coast. Isolated morning showers along
exposed parts of the southern Queensland coast. Fine and mostly sunny elsewhere.
A warm day in the northwest. Powerful surf along exposed beaches in Queensland's
southeast. Moderate mostly SE to SW winds, tending fresh and gusty over the far
north and along the north tropical coast. A Very High Fire Danger in the Maranoa
and Warrego district.
Forecast for Friday
The tropical low or Tropical Cyclone over the northwest Coral Sea is expected
to remain well offshore at this stage. Fine and mostly sunny across most of the
state except for scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York
Peninsula and the eastern parts of the Gulf Country. Isolated showers may occur
along the north tropical coast and about the exposed southern coast. Daytime
temperatures well above average over the far northwest.
Forecast for Saturday
The Tropical Cyclone is likely to remain well off the tropical east coast and
dry air across Queensland should result in fine and mostly sunny conditions
persisting across most of the state, except for scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula and the eastern parts of the Gulf
Country. Isolated showers may also occur about parts of the southern tropical
and Capricornia coast. Daytime temperatures should be above average over the
northwest.
Forecast for Sunday
At this stage, the Tropical Cyclone is likely to weaken off the tropical east
coast and dry air across Queensland should result in fine and mostly sunny
conditions persisting across most of the state. However, scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms should persist over Cape York Peninsula and the eastern
parts of the Gulf Country. Isolated showers may also occur about parts of the
tropical and Capricornia coast due to moist onshore SE winds. A trough and
southerly change is likely to bring late showers to southeast districts, with
the chance of isolated thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures should be above
average over the northwest and southeast of the state, but cooler in the
southwest.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The trough and southerly change is likely to spread north along the east
coast as a new high moves into the Tasman Sea. As a result, showers are likely
to spread along most of the east Queensland coast and inland into the eastern
interior. Cooler conditions will spread to the southeast of the state in the
wake of the change. An inland trough may generate isolated afternoon and evening
showers and possible thunderstorms over the central and southern interior from
Tuesday. The weakened ex-Tropical Cyclone may drift back towards the tropical
coast with an increase in showers, rain and storms with fresh to possibly strong
winds, but this is still highly uncertain at this stage. Fine in the west of the
state.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
