Weather Situation
An upper level low is expected to drift westwards across the southern
interior today. A high near Tasmania is expected to move into the Tasman Sea
today and to extend a ridge up Queensland's southeast coast. A low level trough
is expected to form over the southern interior during today and to extend
northwards into the northern interior. The monsoon trough stretches from
Queensland's northwest to the North Tropical Coast.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Scattered showers and mainly isolated thunderstorms across the eastern half
of the state, along with some areas of rain about the southern districts and
southeast tropics and some moderate to locally heavy falls about the southern
interior. Monsoonal showers and rain periods with scattered thunderstorms over
the northern parts of the Peninsula district. Fine and mostly sunny in the
state's west. Light to moderate SE to NE winds across most of the state, fresh
at times about the southeast. Moderate to fresh westerly winds across the
Peninsula district. A very high fire danger in the Channel Country.
Forecast for Monday
The upper level low is expected to lie over southwestern Queensland and an
associated low level trough should lie over the same region and extend into the
northern interior. Both weather systems should work together to produce
scattered showers and storms and areas of rain with some moderate to heavy local
falls over the southern interior. Scattered showers and mainly isolated storms
are expected over most of the remainder of the eastern half of the state and
also over the Channel Country. The high in the Tasman Sea should push a fresh
onshore flow and scattered showers across the state's southeast. Scattered
showers and storms and areas of rain over the Peninsula district in a fresh
monsoonal wind flow. Scattered showers and storms and areas of rain extending
across the North Tropical Coast during the day.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper low should lie near Queensland's far southwest, maintaining an area
of scattered showers and storms and areas of rain with some moderate to locally
heavy falls across the southern interior. Scattered showers and mainly isolated
storms over most of the remainder of the state except the southeast where a
fresh onshore flow out of the high in the Tasman should produce scattered
showers. Scattered monsoonal showers and storms and areas of rain over the
northern parts of the Peninsula district, and showers and storms tending to rain
areas over the northern tropics.
Forecast for Wednesday
A firm ridge along the east coast will maintain an onshore flow and mainly
isolated showers over the state's southeast. The focus of the monsoon flow is
likely to shift eastwards to the Coral Sea area, however rain areas and
thunderstorms are likely to continue over the far north. The upper low should
remain near Queensland's far southwest and will continue to provide instability
over western Queensland and at least isolated showers and thunderstorms over
most of the state, more widespread over the southwest.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
A monsoonal wind flow should persist through the Torres Strait and over Cape
York Peninsula, with rain and storms expected in this area and scattered showers
and thunderstorms through the remaining tropics. The broad upper trough should
gradually decay over central Australia, with the atmosphere tending to stabilise
over western Queensland and showers and thunderstorm activity easing late in the
week. The Tasman Sea high should move eastwards towards New Zealand but will
nonetheless maintain a firm ridge, fresh onshore winds and scattered showers
along Queensland's southeast coast.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
