MELBOURNE - Mar 1/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for northern Gulf waters and northern Peninsula waters. Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation An upper level low is located over the southeast interior, and will drift to the west later today. A low level trough extends between the state's northwest and the southern interior, and is expected to move eastwards and strengthen near the Wide Bay and Capricornia coast today. A high near Tasmania is expected to move into the Tasman Sea today, extending a ridge into southern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over northern and eastern Queensland, with moderate falls, locally heavy particularly with thunderstorms. Cloudy with isolated showers over parts of western Queensland, particularly this morning. Cooler than average temperatures in the south expected. Light to moderate SW to SE winds across most of the state, fresh at times about the southern interior and the Wide Bay and Capricornia coast. Moderate to fresh westerly winds across the Peninsula district. A very high fire danger in the Channel Country. Forecast for Sunday A broad upper trough is likely to remain over southern Queensland. The high will move east into the Tasman Sea, extending a fresh to strong E to SE wind flow further north through southern and central Queensland waters. Scattered showers, patchy rain and possible isolated thunderstorms will occur through the eastern half of the state with below average daytime temperatures expected through central and southern areas. The monsoon trough is expected to shift southwards over Cape York Peninsula, with monsoonal rain and storms to its north. Isolated showers and storms are expected through the central west and southwest as moist and unstable air extends west. Fine and mostly sunny in the northwest. Forecast for Monday A broad upper trough should lie across southwestern Queensland while the high in the Tasman Sea maintains a fresh to strong E to SE wind flow across southern and central Queensland waters. The monsoon should remain active through the northern Peninsula, with more widespread showers, rain areas and storms extending south through the remaining tropics. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected through central and western districts, more widespread in the southwest. Scattered showers and patchy rain through the southeastern corner of the state. Forecast for Tuesday The high should remain over the Tasman Sea and maintain a fresh easterly wind flow and scattered showers over Queensland's southeast. More isolated showers are expected over the southern interior and isolated showers and storms are possible about the far southwest and the central interior. Scattered showers and isolated storms over the remainder of the state, with areas of rain also over the northern districts. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday A monsoonal wind flow should persist through the Torres Strait and over Cape York Peninsula, with rain and storms expected in this area and scattered showers and storms through the remaining tropics. The broad upper trough should remain over southwestern Queensland, with showers and storms therefore persisting through the west of the state. The high should move eastwards across the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand, extending a firm ridge, fresh to strong SE winds and scattered showers further north along the east coast towards the southern tropics.
