Weather Situation
A high southeast of New Zealand extends a weakening ridge over the southern
Coral Sea. A surface trough and an associated weak low lie off the southern
tropical coast and are expected to move slowly north to northeast over the
coming days. An upper level trough will strengthen over the southern interior of
Queensland tonight and tomorrow while a surface trough will shift slowly east
through the southwestern corner of the state.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the southern interior, spreading to
rain at night with some moderate locally heavy falls developing. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms through the northern half of the state, with
showers tending to rain at times along the central and southern tropical coast.
Isolated showers elsewhere around the state, with isolated thunderstorms over
remaining western districts. Moderate to fresh W'ly winds through Torres Strait.
Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds along the east coast south of Cairns. Fresh S
to SE winds extending through the far southwest. Light to moderate mostly NW to
NE winds elsewhere. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country.
Forecast for Friday
A band of rain, showers and thunderstorms moving east over the Maranoa,
southern central Highlands and Darling Downs and Granite Belt district with some
moderate to heavy falls likely. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the north
and east of the state, becoming scattered in the afternoon. Isolated showers in
the southeast and central coast, becoming scattered in the afternoon with patchy
rain and isolated thunderstorms from the west. Mostly fine with only isolated
showers and possible storms through the northwest. Moderate to fresh W'ly winds
through Torres Strait. Light to moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast
south of Cairns, fresh at times. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds extending
through the far southwest. Light to moderate mostly NW to NE winds elsewhere. A
Very High to Severe fire danger in the Channel Country, and a Very High fire
danger in the Maranoa and Warrego district.
Forecast for Saturday
Some uncertainty exists with the movement of the upper trough but at this
stage it will most likely remain slow moving over the southern interior of the
state. A large high will move east over Tasmania, extending a firm ridge and a
moist, fresh E'ly wind flow over southern Queensland waters. This will combine
with the upper trough to generate scattered showers, patchy rain and isolated
thunderstorms through central and southeast districts and west to the Maranoa
with some moderate falls likely, possibly locally heavy with storms. Cool
daytime temperatures will occur under the extensive cloud in these parts. The
monsoonal flow through Torres Strait will freshen, with scattered showers and
storms expected through northern districts. Cloud will extend through the far
southwest of the state though with little or no rain. Fine and mostly sunny
conditions are expected elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
A broad upper trough is likely to remain over southern Queensland. The high
will move east into the Tasman Sea, extending a fresh to strong E to SE wind
flow into southern and central Queensland waters. Scattered showers, patchy rain
and possible isolated thunderstorms will occur through central and southern
districts east of Charleville with another cool day expected through most parts.
The monsoon trough will most likely shift south through the Peninsula, with rain
and storms to its north and scattered showers and isolated storms over the
tropics to its south. Isolated showers and storms are expected through the
central west and southwest as a moist and unstable airmass extends west. Fine
and mostly sunny conditions are expected in the northwest.
Forecast for Monday
A broad upper trough is likely to remain over southern Queensland. The high
will remain slow moving in the Tasman Sea, extending a fresh to strong E to SE
wind flow into southern and central Queensland waters. Scattered showers, patchy
rain and possible isolated thunderstorms will occur through central and southern
districts east of Charleville with another cool day expected through most parts.
The monsoon trough will remain slow moving over the Peninsula district, with
rain and storms to its north and scattered showers and isolated storms over the
tropics to its south. Isolated showers and storms are expected through western
districts in a generally moist and unstable airmass.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A monsoonal wind flow will persist through Torres Strait and Cape York
Peninsula, with rain and storms expected in this area and scattered showers and
storms through the remaining tropics. The broad upper trough is likely to remain
over the southern or southeastern interior of Queensland. The large high will
move east over the Tasman Sea towards New Zealand, extending a firm ridge and
fresh to strong SE winds further north along the east coast towards the southern
tropics. This will result in scattered shower activity and possible isolated
storms persisting through areas south and east of about Emerald, with more
isolated shower and storm activity elsewhere.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Friday.
