Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 27/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from
Bowen to Burnett Heads.
Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams.

Weather Situation
A high near New Zealand extends a firm ridge over the southern Coral Sea. A
surface trough lies off the central coast while a weak low lies within the
trough near Bowen. The low and trough are expected to move slowly northwest
today before weakening early on Thursday.  A new upper trough will strengthen
over southwestern Queensland during Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Areas of rain, scattered showers and possible local thunder over the Central
Coast, Capricornia and Central Highlands districts with moderate to locally
heavy falls near the coast.  Scattered showers over the southeast tending to
light showers and areas of patchy rain about the southeast interior. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms over the southwest.  Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over northern districts and fine and mostly sunny over the central
west.  Light to moderate mostly NW to NE winds over the northern tropics.
Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds elsewhere, strong and gusty at times along the
central and Capricornia coasts.
Forecast for Thursday
Scattered showers, thunderstorms and developing rain areas through the
southern interior with moderate falls,  possibly locally heavy during the
evening. Isolated showers through southeastern districts. Scattered showers,
isolated thunderstorms and rain areas about the Central and North Tropical Coast
districts with possible moderate falls. Scattered showers and isolated
thunderstorms over the northeast interior, northern and far southwestern areas.
Fine and mostly sunny over the northwest and Central West. Light to moderate
mostly NW to NE winds over the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to NE
winds elsewhere, fresh about the central east coast.
Forecast for Friday
The upper trough is forecast to strengthen while moving east over southern
Queensland bringing rain, showers and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls
over the southern and southeast interior. Onshore winds will combine with the
upper trough to bring increasing showers to southeastern districts. Scattered
showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere in eastern and northern districts.
Fine and mostly sunny in the west and southwest. Cold daytime temperatures about
the southern and southeast interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper trough is forecast to move east over southeast Queensland,
increasing showers and rain areas over the east coast south of about Mackay.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to persist about northern and
remaining eastern districts. Fine an mostly sunny in the central, west and
southwest parts.  Cold daytime temperatures about the southern and southeast
interior.
Forecast for Sunday
A broad upper trough is likely to sit over southern Queensland while a new
high over southeastern Australia continues to push moist onshore winds onto the
southern east coast. Scattered showers in the southeast. Scattered showers and
isolated thunderstorms along remaining eastern and northern districts, tending
very isolated through central and southern inland parts. Continuing cold daytime
temperatures in the southern interior.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The broad upper trough is likely to remain over southern or southeastern
Queensland while a high is expected to track east across the Tasman Sea and
continue directing moist onshore winds across southern parts. As a result expect
scattered showers along much of the east coast, tending isolated about the
eastern interior. The monsoon trough is expected to strengthen over far northern
Queensland leading to scattered showers and thunderstorms and an increase in
rain areas over Cape York Peninsula, the Gulf Country and the North Tropical
Coast district.
