MELBOURNE - Feb 24/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast districts for heavy rain. A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters from St Lawrence to Point Danger, including Hervey Bay and Moreton Bay. Flood warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high [1033 hPa] near New Zealand extends a firm ridge over the southern Coral Sea. A slow moving upper level low is located over the central highlands of Queensland. A complex surface trough near the central and southern Queensland coast is expected to deepen during the next 24 hours, bringing heavy rain and strong and gusty winds to these coastal areas. Forecast for the rest of Monday Cloudy and cool with scattered to widespread showers, areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms over the southern interior east of Charleville, central and southeast districts with moderate falls, heavy east of a line from about St Lawrence to Stanthorpe. Generally isolated showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and northwest, increasing to scattered showers and thunderstorms over northern Cape York Peninsula. Fine over the west. Cool maximum temperatures with the cloud and rain. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds, tending strong and gusty along the central and southern Queensland coasts. A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders districts. Forecast for Tuesday The upper level low is expected to remain over the central Queensland interior but may begin to weaken and possibly move very slowly east or southeast. The surface trough is likely to remain deep and be located near the central Queensland coast. The combination of the troughs and the humid and fresh to strong onshore E to NE flow from the high onto the central and southern Queensland coast is expected to continue producing widespread showers, thunderstorms and areas of rain about central and southeast districts with moderate to heavy falls likely to continue. Cool maximum temperatures with the cloud and rain. Scattered to isolated showers and thunderstorms over the remaining eastern districts, southern interior and the northern tropics. Fine and mostly sunny conditions over the far west. Forecast for Wednesday The upper level trough and low over eastern Queensland is expected to weaken and most likely move east or southeast and contract offshore. Meanwhile, the onshore flow onto the east coast is expected to remain fresh to strong about the central and southern Queensland coast but most likely ease a little by late in the day as the high moves well east of New Zealand. As a result, areas of rain with moderate to possibly locally heavy falls near the Capricornia and southeast Queensland coast are likely to ease from the west. However, showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue over remaining northern and eastern areas of the state. Cool maximum temperatures to continue over central and southeast districts. A new surface and upper trough is likely to bring some patchy rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms to the southwest in the afternoon and evening, although little rainfall is expected. Forecast for Thursday The next surface and upper trough is expected to move eastwards across the Queensland interior, accompanied by a band of scattered showers and thunderstorms over the central and southern interior which is expected to move into the southeast interior late in the day. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are also expected over the northern and eastern tropics, with more isolated showers and thunderstorms over the west, clearing from the southwest during the day. Generally cloudy with showers over coastal districts from the Capricornia to the Southeast Coast. Maximum temperatures below average over southern and central Queensland. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The surface and upper trough is expected to move over eastern Queensland on Friday before contracting offshore early in the weekend. However, another upper trough may move into the Queensland interior after this, with showers and thunderstorms persisting over eastern Queensland. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue across the northern tropics due to the monsoon trough, which may have deepened a little by late in the week. Fine over the west. Maximum temperatures to remain below average over the southern half of the state. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Monday.
