MELBOURNE - Feb 23/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Capricornia districts for tonight and Monday. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A large high [1028 hPa] near New Zealand extends a ridge over the southern Coral Sea. An upper level low over central western Queensland is expected to move slowly eastwards across Queensland during the next few days, inducing a deepening trough along central and southern parts of the east coast. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Fine over the southwest. Isolated showers and gusty thunderstorms over the Gulf Country. Scattered to widespread showers and gusty thunderstorms elsewhere, tending to areas of rain and moderate to locally heavy falls over the eastern tropics. Some thunderstorms are likely to be severe. Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southeast. Moderate SE to NE winds, fresh over parts of the interior and along the east coast. Forecast for Monday The upper level trough and low should move only slightly eastwards across the central interior, and is likely to strengthen the onshore flow of humid winds across central and southeast Queensland, resulting in widespread showers, thunderstorms and areas of rain about central and southeast districts. Moderate to heavy falls are likely about the coast and possibly into nearby inland areas as a surface trough near the east coast deepens. Cool maximum temperatures with the cloud and rain. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remaining eastern districts and the far north. Fine and mostly sunny conditions over the remainder of the west. Forecast for Tuesday The upper level trough and low is expected to move over far eastern Queensland, and combined with the humid and fresh to strong onshore E to NE flow from the high is expected to continue producing widespread showers, thunderstorms and areas of rain about central and southeast districts. Moderate to heavy falls are likely about the coast and possibly into nearby inland areas as the surface trough remains near the coast. Cool maximum temperatures with the cloud and rain. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the remaining eastern districts and the far north. Fine and mostly sunny conditions over the remainder of the west. Forecast for Wednesday The upper level trough is expected to contract offshore, while the onshore flow onto the east coast weakens. As a result, areas of rain and moderate to possibly locally heavy falls near the Capricornia and southeast Queensland coast are likely to ease. However, showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue over remaining northern and eastern areas of the state. A new surface and upper trough is likely bring isolated showers and thunderstorms to the southwest in the afternoon and evening. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The next surface and upper trough is expected to move across Queensland, accompanied by a band of showers and thunderstorms which is expected to move into eastern Queensland on Friday and then offshore early in the weekend. Otherwise, showers are expected about the east coast in the onshore airflow ahead of the troughs, with showers and thunderstorms expected to continue across the northern tropics due to a weak monsoon trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Sunday.
