Weather Situation
A low pressure system lies about 240 kilometres east of Coolangatta and is
expected to continue moving to the west southwest and to cross the northern New
South Wales coast today. An upper level trough over the Channel Country is
expected to strengthen and drift slowly east across Queensland during the next
few days.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Scattered showers about the far southeast of the state along with possible
rain periods and some damaging wind gusts about the Gold Coast and Southern
Border Ranges, easing during the afternoon and evening. Fine and mostly sunny
over the southern interior except for some isolated showers and storms over the
state's far southwest. Scattered showers and storms over the northern tropics,
and more isolated activity over the central coast and the central interior. Fine
over the remainder of the state. Light winds over the tropics. Mainly moderate
SW to SE winds over the state's interior, and fresh to strong SW to NW winds
about the southeast, along with some possibly damaging gusts over the Gold Coast
and Southern Border Ranges. A very high fire danger over the southern interior.
Forecast for Saturday
The upper level trough should strengthen over western Queensland and this
should help generate mostly isolated showers and storms over most of the state
except the southwest quarter. Showers and storms more widespread over the far
northern tropics.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper level trough should strengthen over central Queensland, allowing at
least isolated showers and storms to continue across much of the state except in
the southwest quarter which will be fine and mostly sunny. The strengthening of
the upper level trough and an associated strengthening of an onshore flow about
the southeast of the state should allow showers to increase about the region and
for them to spread to rain areas during the day.
Forecast for Monday
The upper level trough should move a little eastwards across central
Queensland, helping the western districts to clear to fine and mostly sunny
conditions, and for showers and storms to continue over the eastern half of the
state. A continuation of a rapid onshore flow should maintain rain areas about
the state's southeast. These rain areas may also spread northwards to the
Capricornia region during the day.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
The upper level trough should maintain showers and storms over the eastern
half of the state and rain areas about the southeast on Tuesday. The upper
level trough should weaken during the middle of the week, leaving just showers
and some thunderstorms across the far eastern districts.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
