MELBOURNE - Feb 21/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning is current for Dangerous Surf about the coast from Cape Moreton to the New South Wales border. A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for Damaging Winds for the Gold Coast and Southern Border Ranges for this afternoon and into Friday morning. A Gale Warning is current for coastal waters between Double Island Point and Point Danger. Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A low pressure system lies about 320 kilometres east to southeast from Brisbane, and is expected to move southwest and cross into northeast N.S.W during Friday. An upper level trough is expected to form over western Queensland in the forecast period. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics, tending to isolated showers and thunderstorms further south and over most eastern districts. Showers generally over the SE region, increasing towards the SE coast. Fine and generally clear in the far west. Light SE to NE winds across the tropics, light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Light to moderate S to SE winds about the east coast increasing to fresh to strong S to SW winds near the southeast coast. A moderate to high fire danger over parts of the eastern interior, very high fire danger in the southern interior. Dangerous surf south of Cape Moreton. Forecast for Friday The low is expected to move through northeast N.S.W with easing winds about the southeast coast. A weak surface trough in the Channel Country will generate some isolated late showers and thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms continuing over the tropics, southern tropics and central coast. Showers or rain near the southern border on the southeast coast. Fine over the remainder of the state. Light winds across the tropics, light to moderate S to SE winds about the east coast tending to fresh to strong SW to NW winds on the southeast coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Moderate to high fire danger over eastern districts, high to very high fire danger in parts of the west. Forecast for Saturday The upper level trough develops further over western Queensland and this will increase instability over the southeast region leading to afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Showers increasing about the east coast. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the tropics and over the northeast half of the state. Fine and mostly sunny over the southern and western districts. Forecast for Sunday The upper level trough should strengthen over central Queensland, this will maintain the showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and over the eastern half of the state. Showers will increase into rain areas on the Wide Bay and southeast coasts. Fine and sunny in the west. Strong E to NE winds developing about the southeast coast. Forecast for Monday Little change from Sunday with the upper level trough maintaining the showers and thunderstorms over northern and eastern Queensland. Rain areas persisting over the southeast region and showers generally about the east coast. Fine over the interior. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday By Tuesday the upper level trough weakens with rain areas easing about the southeast region. Showers and thunderstorms continuing over the tropics and through the eastern half of the state. By Wednesday the rain areas have give way to showers over the southeast region, no change over the remainder of the state. By Thursday, thunderstorms developing over the southwest of the state associated with a surface trough. Showers and thunderstorms persisting across the tropics and showers along parts of the east coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Friday.
