Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 19/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Severe Weather Warning is current for Damaging Winds and
Dangerous Surf about the coast and islands from Sandy Cape to the New South
Wales border.
A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for Abnormally High Tides about the
Gold Coast beaches for Wednesday morning.
A Gale Warning is current for coastal waters between Sandy Cape and Point
Danger, including Moreton Bay.
A Strong Wind Warning is current for coastal waters between Gladstone and Sandy
Cape.
Flood Warnings are current for various rivers and streams.

Weather Situation
A high [1028 hPa] near New Zealand is expected to remain slow moving whilst a
new high will enter the Tasman Sea on Wednesday. A trough and low pressure
system lie off the southeast coast of Queensland and are expected to remain slow
moving over the next 24 hours. Strong to gale force winds and rough seas and
swells are expected to persist about the coast south of Sandy Cape. An upper
level trough off the southeast Queensland coast is expected to remain slow
moving.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the tropics
with isolated showers over the remaining interior of the state. Gusty showers
and rain areas with possible thunderstorms about the Wide Bay and Southeast
Coast region. Windy along the southern coasts with dangerous surf south of Sandy
Cape. Moderate SW to SE winds about much of the state with fresh to strong and
gusty S to SE winds about the coast south of about Burnett Heads. Damaging wind
gusts about the exposed coast south of Sandy Cape. Lighter winds through the
northern tropics.
Forecast for Wednesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over northern
districts, while scattered gusty showers and windy conditions are expected in
the far southeast. Dangerous surf conditions persisting along the southern
Queensland coast with abnormally high tides about the Gold Coast on the morning
high tide. Isolated showers over the remaining southern tropics and eastern
parts of the state. Fine and mostly sunny conditions about the southwest of the
state and much of the southern interior.  Moderate SW to SE winds over much of
the state with fresh to strong and gusty S to SE winds about the coast south of
Burnett Heads. Damaging wind gusts about the exposed coast south of Sandy Cape.
A Very High fire danger in the Channel Country and Maranoa and Warrego
districts.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper level trough should remain slow moving over eastern districts,
while the surface low is expected to move slowly southwards off the southeast
Queensland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over northern
districts, while scattered heavy showers and windy conditions are expected in
the southeast. The heavy showers about the southeast may tend to rain, depending
on the movement of the low pressure system off the southeast coast. Dangerous
surf along the southern Queensland coast. Fine and mostly sunny conditions
should occur over remaining parts of the state in the wake of the upper
trough.
Forecast for Friday
There is considerable uncertainty about the movement of the surface low by
this stage, but it is likely to move southwards into northern New South Wales.
Scattered heavy Showers and possible rain areas are expected about the far
southeast of the state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely about the
southwest of the state under the next upper trough that should move into the
state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms should continue through the tropics.
Fine and mostly sunny conditions should occur elsewhere.
Forecast for Saturday
Uncertainty remains at this stage of the forecast but it is likely that a
large upper trough will continue to affect most of Queensland. Scattered showers
and thunderstorms are expected to affect most of the eastern half of the state
and the southern interior. Conditions should be more stable over the western
half of the state in the wake of the trough and therefore only isolated showers
and possible thunderstorms are likely.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The upper trough is likely to contract slowly eastwards during the outlook
period. However, conditions remain unstable across much of the state with
further showers and isolated thunderstorms expected. These are likely to be more
widespread through the tropics and about the east of the state.
