Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Feb 18/13 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
A Severe Weather Warning is current for heavy rainfall about
coastal and adjacent inland areas between Burnett Heads and the Gold Coast.
A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for Dangerous Surf developing about the
coast and islands from Burnett Heads to the New South Wales border from Tuesday
with Damaging Winds developing during Tuesday evening.
A Gale Warning has been issued for coastal waters between Gladstone and Point
Danger for Tuesday, including Hervey and Moreton Bay.
A Flood Warning is current for the Balonne River.

Weather Situation
A high [1027 hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea is expected to move slow
moving near New Zealand. A trough lies off the east coast of Queensland. A low
lies on the trough off the Central Coast and is expected to move south-southeast
during the rest of today and Tuesday while deepening. The low is expected to be
located offshore of the southern Queensland coast by late Tuesday and on
Wednesday, and is expected to produce strong to gale force winds and rough seas
and swells, depending on its proximity to the coast. An upper level trough over
the Queensland interior is moving slowly eastwards.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over northern, central and western
districts. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over remaining eastern
districts, with rain areas and heavy falls about the coast and adjacent inland
areas south of about Burnett Heads. Some storms are likely to be severe.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula. Moderate
to fresh SE winds about the east coast, tending strong and gusty at times near
the central and southern coast. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds over the
interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected over the tropics
with isolated showers over the remaining interior of the state. Areas of rain
and isolated thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls about the Wide Bay and
Southeast Coast region are expected to ease later in the day, though this will
depend on the position of the low offshore. Windy along the southern coasts with
dangerous surf developing south of Sandy Cape. Temperatures are expected to
remain below average for most of the state. Moderate SW to SE winds about much
of the state with fresh to strong and gusty S to SE winds about the coast south
of about Burnett Heads. Lighter winds through the northern tropics.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper level trough should remain slow moving over eastern districts,
while the surface low is expected to remain off the southern Queensland coast.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over northern districts, while
scattered showers and windy conditions are expected in the southeast. Dangerous
surf conditions persisting along the southern Queensland coast. Isolated showers
over the remaining southern tropics and eastern parts of the state. Fine and
mostly sunny conditions should occur over remaining parts of the state in the
wake of the upper trough.
Forecast for Thursday
The upper level trough should remain slow moving over eastern districts,
while the surface low is expected to move slowly southwards off the southeast
Queensland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected over northern
districts, while isolated showers and windy conditions are expected in the
southeast. Dangerous surf along the southern Queensland coast. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions should occur over remaining parts of the state in the wake of
the upper trough.
Forecast for Friday
There is considerable uncertainty about the movement of the surface low by
this stage, but it is likely to move southwards into northern New South Wales.
Showers and possibly rain areas are expected about the far southeast of the
state. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely about the southwest of the
state under the next upper trough that should move into the state. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms should continue through the tropics. Fine and mostly
sunny conditions should occur elsewhere.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
There remains considerable uncertainty in the outlook at this stage. Another
major upper trough system looks likely to affect Queensland through the period.
Unstable conditions are expected to continue over most of the state with the
eastern areas of Queensland likely to see more widespread showers and
thunderstorms and rain areas.
